Job Description

Business teachers are responsible for teaching students the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in business. They often use lectures and discussions to deliver instruction and are often required to monitor students' performance and adjust their actions based off of the actions of their pupils.

A knowledge of effective education and training principles, business administration and management principles, and computers are required to effectively prepare students for this career. Oral and written communication skills are also essential, along with active listening skills, an understanding of different learning strategies, critical-thinking skills, and reading comprehension skills.

Education and Training Requirements

To become a certified business teacher, students need to obtain a bachelor's degree and complete an educator preparation program.

With a bachelor's degree in secondary education, students will complete their educator preparation program as part of their degree as long as the college is licensed by the Connecticut State Department of Higher Education. Students can also complete a post-baccalaureate educator preparation program after earning their bachelor's degree.

In the EPP, aspiring business teachers take courses specific to business, the grades they are interested in becoming certified in (7-12), and the teaching profession. They also have the opportunity to participate in hands-on clinical experiences in a variety of settings and prepare an edTPA portfolio.

Exam Requirements

All students seeking CT certification must provide test scores for the SAT, ACT, or the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators to the Connecticut State Department of Education. They also need to meet the minimum score on their edTPA portfolio-based assessment. As long as these scores are sufficient, students may move on to their Praxis II Subject Assessment. To become a business teacher, the ETS 5101 Business Education: Content Knowledge assessment is required.

Seeking Certification

Once aspiring business teachers pass the EPP and their Praxis II Subject Assessment, they can submit their application to the state for certification. First certificate applicants must submit a paper application.

Renewal Requirements

Connecticut's certification system has three tiers: Initial Educator Certificate, Provisional Educator Certificate, and the Professional Educator Certificate.

The Initial Educator Certificate is valid for three years. To upgrade to the Provisional Educator Certificate, teachers must apply before their initial certificate expires. To qualify for a Provisional Educator Certificate, teachers must complete the Teacher Education and Mentoring (TEAM) program and have 10 months of experience under their current certificate within an approved Connecticut public school or 30 months at an approved non-public school. The Provisional Educator Certificate is valid for eight years.

The third tier, Professional Educator Certificate, requires 30 months of experience at a Connecticut public or approved non-public school during their Provisional Educator Certificate, plus any additional courses outlined by the Connecticut certification regulations for their requested endorsement.
