Job Description

Business educators in Ohio prepare middle school and high school students for success in their postsecondary education and in the business workplace. They provide students with both broad skills, such as the ability to learn new skills, generalize knowledge, and solve problems, and specialized skills for success in the business field. They design courses, projects, classwork, and exams. They teach classes, work with students, assess student progress, and discuss student progress with parents. Business teachers may also advise extracurricular activities.

Education

Those who want to pursue a Resident Educator license must first complete a bachelor's degree and an educator preparation program at an accredited college or university. Programs that are designed to prepare students for Integrated Business licensure will adhere to Ohio Integrated Business Program standards. Coursework will include 3 semester hours of reading in their content area, courses which will prepare them for their licensure exams and to teach in Ohio, preparation to teach students with dyslexia, and preparation to educate students about opioid and other substance abuse. They will also complete at least a 12-week internship.

Resident Educator License

In order to apply for a Resident Educator License, candidates must pass two Ohio Assessments for Educators exams. Candidates who want to teach middle grades must pass the OAE Pedagogy Assessment: 002 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Middle Childhood (4-9). Candidates who want to teach in high school must pass the 003 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12). All candidates for Integrated Business licensure, regardless of grade level, must pass the OAE Content Assessment: 008 Business Education. Upon passing their exams, candidates will apply online for the Resident Educator License, which is valid for four years.

Extension, Renewal, and Advancement

During their four-year Resident Educator License period, educators are intended to complete their Resident Educator Program, complete their focused mentoring, and pass the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA). Educators who have met these requirements will advance to the 5-year Professional Educator License. If an educator is unable to complete their Resident Educator Program, complete their mentoring, and/or pass the RESA, educators may extend the Resident Educator License for one year or renew the license for four years, depending upon how long they require to complete the Resident Educator Program, complete mentoring, and pass the RESA.
