Job Description

First grade teachers instruct students who have moved up from kindergarten and are ready to continue their primary education. If you notice any challenges students face during their time in your class, you can work with them on an individual level to help them overcome their issues. Your communication with parents is extremely important, as you will provide vital information about their children's progress through your class. You will grade and provide feedback on in-class and homework assignments throughout the year. Traditionally, you will work for ten months of the year with a summer break for the remaining two months.

Education and Training Requirements

You'll need a bachelor's degree with a teacher education program before you become a teacher in Louisiana. For first grade, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education Gr 1-5. Some of the topics you'll learn about during your courses include public speaking, child psychology, and elementary classroom management. You'll learn how to help your future students establish the fundamentals of core subjects like math and history. At the end of your degree program, you'll participate in a teacher education preparation experience, where you'll get to participate in teaching a class as a student under a licensed educator's supervision.

Exam Requirements

Before earning your certification, you'll need to pass several Praxis Exams. All educators in Louisiana, including first grade teachers, must have satisfactory scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam, which tests reading, writing, and mathematics. Along with some essay responses on the writing section, you'll mostly answer multiple choice questions throughout the test.

As a first grade teacher, you are also responsible for passing the Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6 test as well as the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam. This content test consists of four subtests: mathematics, reading and language arts, science, and social studies. These four subtests can be taken in one sitting, or you can schedule separate appointments for one or more sections.

Certification Requirements

After passing all of your exams and earning your degree, you are eligible to receive a standard teaching certificate to teach first grade. The initial period lasts for five years; after this expires, you can renew your certificate for three years, and this process repeats as long as you stay active as a teacher. If you end up leaving your teaching position and don't hold any classes for one semester or 90 consecutive days, your license will lapse, and you'll need to earn six continuing education credits from an approved college or university before you can resume teaching.
