Job Description

Teachers in Massachusetts can work in a variety of different environments, but all teachers have a similar day to day responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include interacting with students, tracking student progress, grading assignments, creating lesson plans, creating projects to keep students engaged, and maintaining their classroom. Teachers in middle and high school settings tend to specialize in one area, such as math, science, or literature. Teachers may also take up other responsibilities within a school, such as an athletic coach or detention supervisor.

Education Requirements

The first step in becoming a teacher in Massachusetts is to earn a bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited university or college. Having a higher degree, such as a master's, may help to qualify students for more potential jobs after graduation. In addition to earning a degree, students must also complete and pass an approved teacher preparation program in the state of Massachusetts. For those hoping to teach elementary school, some possible majors could be Early Childhood Development or Elementary Education. For those wishing to teach in either middle school or high school, college is the time to decide which specific subject area that they want to teach.

Exam Requirements

Everyone wishing to become a teacher in the state of Massachusetts must take and pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) tests. These tests are used to measure how well a teacher can communicate with parents/guardians, students, and other educators. One MTEL test that teachers will need to take is the Communication and Literacy Skills Test. All those wishing to be an academic teacher will need to also take subject matter knowledge tests specific to the area that they are going to teach.

Certification Renewal

Teacher's that hold an Initial License will need to apply for a Professional License when it is time for renewal. To obtain a Professional License, teachers will need to complete the necessary form and pay the $100 application fee. Teachers will also need to be able to prove that they have earned 150 Professional Development Points prior to application. Teachers will also need to have a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience, complete a one-year induction program, and have 50 hours of mentored experience. Teachers that already have a Professional License can renew it by meeting the previously listed requirements for obtaining a Professional License.
