Step 1: Understand the Job and Salary

Substitute teachers are required to take over all the job duties of the teachers they are replacing, with a schedule decided by the school principal. In Montgomery County, they are required to work at least five days each semester to remain part of the substitute teacher pool.

Montgomery County recommends that substitute teachers arrive early to organize themselves for the day, have a supplemental plan in case the regular teacher did not leave a lesson plan and leave written feedback for the usual teacher. Montgomery County offers substitute teachers opportunities for stipends and professional development, including the option to participate in a paid professional development day, if they have worked a certain number of hours. Long-term substitutes receive a pay raise after 45 days in the same placement.

Step 2: Get the Required Degree

For most subjects, it is preferred that substitute teachers in Montgomery County have a bachelor's degree or have completed a teacher education program during which they had experience student teaching, from an accredited institution. In extreme cases, the county will accept applicants who have student teaching experience but haven't completed a bachelor's degree yet.

Vocational program substitute teachers don't need a bachelor's degree, but need at least two years of experience in the area (counting college work).

No exams and certifications are required to be a substitute teacher in Montgomery County.

Step 3: Apply for Open Positions

You can find openings for substitute teachers on the Montgomery County Public Schools website. You can also apply for jobs through the website. Applicants must also submit a resume, two employment references, and school transcripts.

Step 4: Attend an Orientation Session

Once applicants are hired, the Office of Human Resources will schedule them to attend an orientation session. Applicants will also get fingerprinted at this session and fill out other required forms. At the orientation, they will also have the opportunity to provide their location and subject preferences for assignments.

Step 5: Use the System

Substitute teachers get classroom placements through a calling or web system. Preferred substitutes will be offered assignments first; if they aren't available, others will get a chance at the placement. Teachers can also contact substitutes directly to fill in for them, but this arrangement still must be recorded through the centralized system (this is the permanent teacher's responsibility). If an assignment is going to be long-term (11 days or more), a form must be filed so the Department of Staffing can approve it. Substitute teachers can wait to receive calls offering them placements but can also proactively search for assignments by calling the substitute office. The county also recommends that substitutes in search of assignments call schools to introduce themselves.
