Education and Preparation

A candidate for a teaching certificate in Nebraska requires the minimum of a Bachelor's degree to qualify for certification. The candidate must also complete a NDOE approved Teacher Education Program from an accredit university. The candidate is also required to complete an NDOE approved Human Relations Training and a Special Education Training, or submit a written statement explaining past employment that has provided them with the skills and experience that are required in the Teacher Certification Manual. Teacher Education Programs in Nebraska include the trainings needed to fulfill this requirement.

Exam

Teaching certification candidates must take the Core Academics Skills (5751) exam that is taken through the Educational Testing Service. This exam assesses the candidate's skills to work in a classroom setting by evaluating their abilities in reading, mathematics, and writing. A certification candidate is exempt from taking the test if they hold a teaching license with two years of classroom teaching experience, or the candidate holds a National Board of Professional teaching standards certification. The Praxis Subject Assessment exam will be needed if the candidate completed a teacher preparation program that does not include direct endorsement to the NDOE for certification in the subject field. If a candidate does not successfully pass these exams or does not get direct endorsement, they may obtain a provisional certificate to begin working.

Experience

Nebraska teachers are required to have experience of teaching in a classroom for a minimum of two years. The two years of teaching experience must be completed within the five years prior to applying for the certification and must be done at a NDOE approved school. If the candidate cannot meet this requirement, they have the option of taking six college credit hours in education related course. If the candidate holds a certification from another state, they may apply for certification but would require to participate in a 15-hour Nebraska college education program.

Application

The teaching certification application is completed online on the Teacher Certification website that is hosted by the NDOE and costs $40 to be certified to teach in non-public schools and $55 to be certified to teach in all schools. Step-by-step instruction on how to access the application is available in the Teaching Certification Manual provided on the NDOE website. Six to eight weeks after the application is submitted, the candidate will receive an email from a NDOE Certification Analyst that will request all required documents needed to obtain a teaching certificate.

Fingerprinting

If the candidate has declared residence in Nebraska for the last five years straight, before applying for certification, they are not required to submit fingerprints. If the candidate cannot meet these criteria, they will need to submit fingerprints using a Livescan process of inking process. A fingerprinting packet must be requested by email within 24 hours after applying and will require the candidate to pay a $50 processing fee in addition to the application fee they will also have to pay. A complete list of fingerprinting locations is available in the Teacher Certification Manual on the NDOE website.
