Joint JD-MBA Programs in Georgia

Students who wish to pursue both an MBA and a Juris Doctorate can save time and money by completing a joint MBA/JD program. This article compares four universities in the state of Georgia that offer this unique degree.

Georgia State University

Students accepted into the part-time or full-time JD/MBA program at Georgia State University design a unique plan of study with their academic advisor. Because courses from one degree program can be applied to the other, students earn the joint degree faster and with less coursework than if they had pursued each degree separately.

Mercer University

At Mercer University, students can complete both an MBA and a Juris Doctor degree in just three years by combining their law curriculum with evening MBA coursework. Students must apply to both schools separately, then start with a year of law school courses, and finally take on business courses in their second and third year of study.

University of Georgia

At the University of Georgia, students can complete either a three- or four-year joint JD/MBA program wherein they begin with one or two years of foundational law courses, then move on to one year of studying business, and then take a combination of law and business electives during their final year. Applicants are encouraged to apply to the business school in their first or second year of law school.

Emory University

Emory University offers two separate tracks for dual JD/MBA students. In the first track, students complete a foundation year at law school, followed by a year at business school, and then complete two years of electives in both schools. In the second track, students complete the program in three and a half years by taking summer MBA courses.

Earning a Joint MBA/JD in Georgia

To complete a dual JD/MBA degree program, students complete core courses and electives from both the business school and the law school. Common courses include:

Contracts

Almost all first-year law students take a course on contracts. In this course, students learn about initiating, writing, and enforcing contractual obligations made between individuals, corporations, and other institutions. Topics may include formalities, the statute of frauds, promissory estoppel, third-party enforcement, material breach of contract, and damages.

Managerial Finance

A common core course in MBA programs is managerial finance. In this class, students learn the frameworks and tools that business owners and investors use to make data-driven financial decisions. They may also learn financial theory that can help explain changes to markets and the economy over the past few years. Topics may include dividend policy, capital budgeting, project valuation, discounted cash flow techniques, portfolio theory, and capital structure.

Taxation

One important subject that lies at the intersection of business and law programs is taxation. Taxes are particularly relevant to business owners, investors, and lawyers who specialize in transactional law. Taxation courses may be divided by taxation for individuals, taxation for corporations, and taxation for partnerships. In a course about taxes for individuals, students may study topics like income tax deductions and property transaction. Other topics may include gains and losses, non-recognition of income, and investment decision making. A course on taxation for corporations may include issues related to business formation, operation, liquidation, and/or transfer.

Admissions Requirements for a Joint JD/MBA in Georgia

Candidates for a joint JD/MBA program must meet the entrance requirements for both programs. In many cases, students start by applying to law school with LSAT test scores and a high GPA. Programs that allow students to apply directly to the dual degree may waive the LSAT requirement in favor of GRE or GMAT scores. Students typically apply to the MBA portion of the program within the first or second year of law school. Many MBA programs require students to submit GRE or GMAT test scores and to showcase relevant work experience. Because it is common for students to pursue law school right after graduating from their undergraduate degree program, applicants can strengthen their applications by demonstrating their involvement in internships and part-time employment.

Students who wish to complement their law school education with an advanced understanding of business practice and principals should consider a joint MBA/JD degree program. Universities in Georgia offer dual programs that allow students to save time and money by completing both degrees simultaneously.
