License Requirements

All teaching certificates in Kansas require a bachelor's degree unless they have qualifying experience and are applying for a focused certificate such as the CTE. In addition, each certification requires relevant content assessments (including Praxis) and pedagogy.

  • Restricted Teaching License: educators who hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent coursework can obtain certification while working towards a full license.
  • Out-of-state educators: Educators licensed out of state may qualify for one of many licenses if they hold a valid out-of-state license and meet certain requirements.
  • STEM: Educators with qualifying work experience and a qualifying degree may be able to obtain a STEM license, or a restricted teaching license while completing any needed requirements (such as teaching and assessments).
  • Career and technical: Educators with occupational experience, or licensure, can qualify for one of several career and technical (CTE) certifications.
  • Educators with distinction: Educators who hold verifiable distinction in their fields through advanced degrees or outstanding performance can qualify for a Visiting Scholar License.
  • Foreign educators: Educators who have valid certification from a foreign country may qualify for a Foreign Exchange license.

Types of Certification

Most certificates can be obtained through alternative pathways. These include:

  • CTE and STEM licenses
  • Exchange/Foreign Exchange License
  • Restricted, Temporary, and Transitional licenses
  • Secondary and Visiting Scholar license
  • License Review Process (LRC) interim license

For any license that serves as a temporary or transitional type of license, an educator can pursue a higher level of licensure by meeting additional requirements (see the last section). Higher license levels include:

  • Professional license (5-year)
  • Accomplished license (10-year)

Applying for Certification

Applicants will need to send in a fingerprint card for their background check, complete any required knowledge assessments and pedagogy. Applications for certification can be completed on the Kansas Licensure Application System website, and pay any processing fees electronically.

License Renewals

Restricted certifications can be renewed twice if an educator submits progress reports and continues any required professional development or teaching. Any alternative certificate is meant to be temporary, and can be renewed while an educator pursues a higher-level certification. Renewals are completed on the licensure website.

License Upgrades

Licenses can be moved up to higher levels as educators complete additional requirements. These requirements can include additional coursework, a higher degree, professional development and content assessments. As educators meet the requirements for a professional certification, they can apply for the upgrade.

Alternatively, educators can add content areas to their existing certificate after completing requirements by submitting a form for adding an endorsement.
