Continuing Education Requirements for Lapsed and Expired Certificates

Teachers who have spent five or more years away from the classroom and let their certificate lapse need to obtain six credits of college continuing education coursework to have it renewed.

CE credits are considered valid if they are printed on an official transcript from an accredited college or university. Each course must be unique, and you can only repeat a course if you earned below a C grade. The Louisiana Department of Education's Division of Certification, Preparation, & Recruitment is responsible for approving all courses that contribute toward CE credit. If your certificate is lapsed and you were initially certified in multiple areas, you can take CE courses in any of your previously certified areas.

Working teachers who have let their Level 2 or 3 certificate expire need to obtain 150 CLUs to have it renewed. These CLUs can be earned through school or district professional development programs and college courses, among other providers. Teachers with a Level 1 certificate that has expired only need to request an extension from their school district.

Continuing Education Opportunities for Teachers with Current Certificates

Louisiana's Department of Education offers two distinct programs for teachers who want to advance their skills through continuing education and/or earn a master's degree to qualify for Level 3 certification. The first is the BESE Tuition Program, which gives certain teachers free tuition to a single course at an accredited college or university within Louisiana. This is only available to teachers with a currently active certification, so you won't be eligible if your credentials are lapsed or expired. Special priority is given to teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to focus on the high demand for educators in these fields. STEM teachers who teach in rural areas at locations classified as Comprehensive/Urgent Intervention Required will have the best chance of receiving a free course through BESE.

There is also the Classroom Teacher Enrollment Program, or CTEP. This program gives teachers the opportunity to claim unfilled seats in classes at a college or university after the end of the normal add/drop period. CTEP only applies when funding for BESE runs out.

Restrictions for BESE Continuing Education Courses in Louisiana

There are certain courses that won't be eligible for tuition reimbursement. You won't be able to use anything in theology or divinity, and any independent study courses cannot contribute toward your continuing education. All courses must have credits attached to them by their respective college or university. The for-credit courses can't be anything non-instructional, like a thesis seminar or something that consists entirely of exams.
