Common Courses in Master of Social Work Programs

Each graduate school has a unique curriculum; however, there are some courses that apply in most master of social work degree programs. These courses include advanced social work, psychopathology, and research methodologies.

Psychopathology

This course uses case studies and other methodologies to allow students to gain experience in diagnosing based upon the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Students are introduced to evidence-based treatments as they apply to specific diagnoses. The DSM is reviewed, and students typically learn the 5-axis system of the DSM, which is clinical disorders, personality disorders and mental retardation, medical conditions, psychosocial and environmental factors, and the Global Assessment of Functioning.

Research Methods

Research methods courses allow students to study areas of social work using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. This includes conducting literature reviews to locate evidence-based solutions to research questions. Students may also be expected to conduct needs assessments and evaluations of both processes and outcomes.

Human Behavior and Social Environments

Human behavior and development within social environments are studied from childhood through the elder years. Students look at various theories and factors affecting social, cultural, and ecological behaviors. The exploration of ethics and values may also be covered in this course.

Clinical Social Worker

While there are some positions in social work that require only a bachelor's degree, to be a clinical social worker, an individual must have a master of social work degree with whatever licensing is required by the local or state authorities. Clinical social workers have been trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of behavioral, emotional, and mental issues.

Mental Health Counselor

A mental health counselor works with individuals, families, couples, and/or groups that are dealing with mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or grief. Evaluation of the client's current mental state and readiness to accept and participate in treatment is an important element of this position. Mental health counselors also develop treatment plans in cooperation with doctors, patients, and families.

Rehabilitation Counselor

Independent living is the ultimate goal that rehabilitation counselors have for their clients. They work with individuals who have emotional, mental, physical, or developmental disabilities by helping them utilize their strengths to minimize their limitations. Rehabilitation counselors often work with other professionals, such as therapists, doctors, or psychologists, to develop treatment plans. This advanced-level practice is addressed in a master of social work program.
