Admittance Requirements for a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology in New York

Applicants are required to have earned a bachelor's degree in any field, although they may need to take some prerequisite courses or have gained some professional experience where they do not have a psychology background. Students may also need to have earned a certain undergraduate GPA (such as 3.0). Schools may also require students to have completed the GRE or GMAT but may not impose a minimum score requirement. In addition, many programs require students to submit two or three references and a writing sample, such as a personal statement of goals.

What Can You Do with a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology

Postsecondary Teachers

Individuals who have earned a master's degree can teach at many community colleges in their field of study. Postsecondary teachers educate students beyond high school through classroom and remote instruction, depending on their position, and may also be responsible for creating course content and curriculum to meet the required course objectives. Graduates of a clinical psychology program may be able to teach students within the field of psychology, utilizing their own education to provide better lessons, assignments, and guidance.

Psychologists

Many psychologists need to have a doctoral degree and experience, but those who have a master's degree can work as psychologist assistants in research, clinical, and counseling positions. Psychologists may perform a variety of tasks including conducting investigations and studies, identifying issues, consulting with clients, and writing reports based on their findings. A master's degree program in clinical psychology gives graduates a deeper understanding of behaviors, problem causes, and effective approaches.

Substance Abuse, Behavioral Disorder, and Mental Health Counselors

Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors help people who suffer from issues such as drug addiction, alcoholism, and other behavioral and mental problems. These counselors may provide consultations, assessments, treatments, and recommendations as well as conduct programs to provide public awareness on problem identifiers. Although educational requirements can vary for these positions, applicants with a master's degree in clinical psychology can often provide more services with less supervision.

Survey Researcher

Survey researchers create surveys and review data to better understand the preferences, beliefs, and opinions of people. Typically, these positions need at least a master's degree in fields such as research or psychology as well as experience in research and statistics via education or practice. Applicants with a master's degree in clinical psychology may be able to conduct more effective surveys and research because of their developed knowledge of psychological processes and human behavior.
