Graduate Degrees That Can Lead to a Career as a Stock Broker

Master's Degree in Business Administration

A Master in Business Administration will develop students' understanding of business fundamentals and leadership, providing an insight into all aspects of business administration. This is the most common master's degree option for stockbrokers, and there are many different ways to study a Master in Business Administration; online or on-campus; through an accelerated 1-year program, a 2-year program, or a dual degree program. All MBA programs require a minimum of a bachelor's degree and generally require approximately a 3.0 GPA or higher. An MBA will generally cover topics such as Accounting, Economics and Corporate Finance and there will be a final capstone project requirement. As this degree program provides such a broad view of business administration, the economy, and finance, this would be a solid degree option for those wishing to advance their career as a stockbroker.

Master's Degree in Economics

During a Master in Economics, students will learn about the importance and impact of the economy, they will learn skills to understand the economic structure and market, and will learn how to recognize factors that can have both a positive and negative impact. Programs run from 1 to 2 years and students have the ability to pursue this degree both online and on-campus. Master degrees in economics require students to have a bachelor's degree and some schools will require passing scores for GRE or GMAT. Students will learn about both micro- and macro-economic theories, and will look closely at the financial system and how the stability impacts the economy. This would be a great degree program for a potential stockbroker, the economy is core to the financial market and by studying the impacts on the economy of certain factors, they will be able to have a greater insight into outside factors affecting the stocks and shares markets.

Master's Degree in Accounting

Students wishing to complete a Master in Accounting can do so as a part-time or full-time student, online or on-campus and generally require around 30 credit hours to be completed - more if an undergraduate degree was not completed in an accounting field. A Master in Accounting will cover topics from Financial Statement Analysis to Taxation and Auditing. If a bachelor degree was not completed in an accounting field, there may be prerequisite courses that need to be completed. Programs can be completed in as quick as 1-year and will include courses such as Economics, Accounting, Quantitate Analysis and Forecasting. A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required along with a minimum of. 3.0 GPA or higher to be accepted into one of the online or on-campus programs. Common Entrance Requirements

Due to the nature of the degree courses, any master degree in a financial field will require a bachelor's degree to have been completed first. Although not all schools will require then, GRE and GMAT scores should be made available on application, as well as all previous transcripts. As a minimum, the majority of schools require a minimum of a 3.0 GPA - if this is lower, then they may require further application material. If a bachelor degree is held in a non-financial field, then there may be some pre-requisite courses that need to be completed before starting the master's program.
