Master's in Economics Programs in New York State

Columbia University

Columbia University offers a three-semester, STEM-designated Master of Arts in Economics program. The coursework focuses on providing practical skills useful for economist careers through courses in applied econometrics and economic modeling.

New York University

At New York University, students can earn an MA in Economics on a full-time basis (in three semesters) or part-time basis (in a maximum of five years). Students begin their program with five required classes in economic mathematics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, applied statistics, and econometrics and then take electives of their choice from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

The New School

At the New School, students can choose between three separate economics graduate degrees. The school offers a one- to two-year MA in Economics, a three-year MS in Economics for students who wish for a more in-depth study of economic modeling and econometrics, and a one- to two-year MA in Global Political Economy and Finance for students who wish to pursue globally focused careers.

University at Albany

The University at Albany offers a Master of Arts in Economics. Within the program, students choose one of the following areas of concentration: international economics, finance, public sector economics, health economics and policy or economic forecasting (only offered to students with a background in mathematics and statistics).

Stony Brook University

Students in Stony Brook's Master of Arts in Economics program have the opportunity to work alongside economics PhD students and faculty and take the same classes. Due to the research emphasis in the program, successful graduates are prepared to continue on to an economics PhD program (either at Stony Brook University or another institution).

Syracuse University

Syracuse University offers a 30-credit-hour Master of Arts in Economics program with a research focus (the faculty's research strengths include labor economics, international trade, public economics, and urban/regional economics). Students begin with required classes in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and mathematical economics before choosing electives of their choice.

Binghamton University

Students can complete Binghamton University's Master of Arts in Economics program in three semesters of full-time study. First, students take courses in economic theory and econometrics. They finish the 32-credit-hour program by choosing economics elective classes.

University at Buffalo

The University at Buffalo offers a 30-credit Master of Arts in Economics program. Students can combine their MA degree with a law degree (JD) or earn an MA in Economics and Education Policy Analysis instead. In addition, the university offers advanced certificates for MA students who wish to develop an expertise in finance, international economics, health services economics, urban-regional economics, the economics of law, or the economics of information and the internet.

Buffalo State University

At Buffalo State University, students can pursue an MA in Applied Economics with a specialization in either financial economics or economic policy analysis. Students begin with core coursework in the history of economic thought, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. They then take specialization coursework and choose between completing a master's thesis or project.

Cornell University

At Cornell University, students can pursue a two-year Master of Science in Applied Economics and Management. After completing core coursework in their first year, students take electives to pursue concentrations in such areas as food and agriculture economics, environmental energy and resource economics, international and development economics, and management.

Application Requirements for a Master's Degree Program in Economics

A bachelor's degree is required for admission to an economics master's degree program, but it does not have to be in a particular field of study. However, to prepare for graduate-level economics programs, students should have completed undergraduate courses in statistics, calculus, linear algebra, and basic economics. Some master's degree programs have minimum GRE test scores and GPA requirements. To apply, students send in their undergraduate transcripts, letters of recommendation from previous professors, and a statement of purpose essay.
