Master's in Molecular Biology in California

This article provides information on ten universities in California that offer master's degree programs in molecular biology. These programs award molecular biology degrees or biology degrees with specializations in molecular biology.

University of California - Los Angeles

UCLA has a Master of Science in Molecular Biology program that offers interdisciplinary study in such areas as biochemistry and structural biology, cell and developmental biology, gene regulation, and molecular pathogenesis. After completing core coursework, master's students have the freedom to choose between the thesis plan or the capstone plan, with the ability to complete either within two years.

California State University - Northridge

CSUN has a biology master's degree program with several concentrations, including molecular biology. Students in this research-oriented program engage in faculty supervised original research and present a completed thesis in addition to completing 31 credits of coursework.

University of California - Riverside

UC Riverside offers a 36-credit Master of Science program in biochemistry and molecular biology. The program allows graduates to choose between the thesis or comprehensive examination graduation track.

University of Southern California

Located in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California provides a Master of Science in Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry program with several research areas, including cell and molecular biology. This program is a research-based terminal degree, and students are required to submit an approved research proposal in a specified area before enrollment. The school also offers MS programs in molecular and computational biology, computational molecular biology, and molecular microbiology and immunology.

San Diego State University

This university's Molecular Biology Institute (MBI) offers a Master of Science in Molecular Biology. The 30-credit program is designed so that course requirements can be completed within three years, including the presentation and defense of a student's thesis.

San Jose State University

San Jose State University offers a Master of Science in Biological Sciences program with a concentration in molecular biology and microbiology. The university offers a two-year graduation plan for the degree, but students unable to complete the coursework and thesis within two years have seven years in total to finish their graduate degree.

Sacramento State University

Sacramento State delivers a Master of Science degree program in biological science with a concentration in molecular and cellular biology. In order to enhance learning outcomes and provide advanced training and research experience, the program's graduate requirements include a thesis project based on laboratory, field, or literature research.

Stanford University

Stanford University's biology department has seventeen main research fields, of which molecular biology is one. The university offers a coterminal Master of Science degree to currently enrolled Stanford students as well as graduate students from other schools.

University of California - Santa Cruz

UC Santa Cruz has a Master of Science program in molecular, cell, and developmental biology that offers research rotations through the faculty-led Program in Biomedical Science and Engineering (PBSE). The Master of Science degree is generally a two-year program.

University of California - Santa Barbara

UC Santa Barbara has two plans leading to a Master of Arts in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. The thesis plan is a researched-based plan that can be completed in two years, while the exam plan provides a broader academic and coursework emphasis that can be completed in one year.
