If you are looking for great school counseling master's degree programs in San Diego you are in luck! Here are the best counseling programs in the San Diego area.

University of San Diego

The University of San Diego offers two separate tracks in their Master of Arts in School Counseling program: (1) a 48-unit school counseling track wherein you obtain a license to work as a counselor in public schools or (2) a more robust 60-unit program wherein graduates obtain a license from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences to be licensed professional clinical counselors (LPCCs). Applicants must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA but are not required to send in GRE test scores.

San Diego State University

San Diego State University offers a 2-year Master of Science in School Counseling program that prepares graduates for the California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) test. The school also offers a unique hybrid online and in-person Master of Arts in Education Counseling program designed to prepare candidates for counseling positions that do not require the PPS license. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree but there is no minimum GPA or GRE requirement.

Brandman University

Although Brandman University has a physical campus in San Diego, all of their programs are either hybrid or fully online. That being said, Brandman University offers a great range of options for students interested in school counseling. Candidates can choose a 4-year Ed.S. degree program in school psychology with specializations in educational psychology, applied behavior analysis, autism or CTEL (English as a second language). Students also have the option to pursue an M.A. in Psychology with a specialization in counseling or an M.A. in Counseling with a PPS certificate track.

Alliant International University

Alliant International University offers three pathways to school counseling: (1) M.A. in Clinical Counseling, (2) M.A. in School Counseling with PPS credential and (3) M.A. in School Psychology with a PPS credential. To apply you will need three personal essays, letters of recommendation and a bachelor's degree transcript with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Most classes can be taken online, in person or a mix of the two.

National College

National College offers a Master of Science in Educational Counseling and a Master of Science in School Psychology, both with an optional PPS credential. At National University students can take 4-week intensive classes, rather than traditional full-semester classes. The school counseling program includes both online and on-campus classes.

Point Loma Nazarene University

If you are interested in a Christian-based counseling program, Point Loma Nazarene University offers an M.A. in Education with a concentration in counseling and guidance. Their program specifically equips students to connect their beliefs to their professional practice. Students can take classes online, on campus or select hybrid course options.
