Coursework Common to Master of Social Work Degree Programs

Coursework for master's level social work programs seeks to provide practitioners with the competencies necessary to successfully fulfill their roles in social services and social welfare agencies. Programs typically include foundational courses followed by advanced social work courses and internship experiences. A bachelor's degree is generally required for admission, and applicants with an undergraduate degree in social work may qualify for advanced standing.

Social Work Practice and Administration

Administration and social work practice coursework builds students' abilities to serve as leaders within diverse human service organizations and community groups or social welfare team building initiatives. Staff management, development, and motivation are topics common to this coursework. Because social workers do not work only with individuals, but also with families, communities, groups, and organizations where negotiation, communication, and management skills may also prove beneficial, social work practice and administration courses aim to promote those skill sets as well as cover topics like budgets and grant/proposal writing.

Policy and Advocacy

Policy and advocacy courses provide a foundational overview of the United States' social services and social service policies as well as these policies' impact on clients and the agencies that serve them. Policy and advocacy courses also help students develop the advocacy skills needed to create change at various levels, from community organizations to state social systems and beyond. Along with socioeconomic and political aspects that determine the development of policies, the role of advocates in promoting the overall wellbeing of clients, their families, and communities may also be introduced.

Social Work Research and Evaluation

In order to promote their ability to evaluate research at the generalist practice level, students will likely encounter bivariate, univariate, and multivariate statistics. Additional data collection and data entry skills may be acquired along with the ability to use data analysis software. Further topics of exploration might include methods for monitoring goals and measuring the effectiveness of interventions as well as how to evaluate the strength of research designs.

Within the District of Columbia are three universities providing Master of Social Work degree programs for those who wish to work for the equity and wellbeing of the individuals and communities they represent. Coursework is designed to ensure graduates have the research and administration tools they need to succeed as social welfare advocates.
