Typical Graduate School Admissions Requirements

Most graduate schools have admissions requirements that are similar, although individual programs can have specific requirements for admission, such as minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average (CGPA) which, in the case of graduate degrees in social work, is often 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The application process is started by completing an admissions application, having all official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate schools sent to the school to which the individual is applying, and writing a statement of purpose or an essay answering specific questions related to why the applicant is seeking a master's degree. Prospective students may be asked to provide letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic sources and to submit an up-to-date résumé or curriculum vitae. Some schools require that applicants submit test scores from the Graduate Records Examinations (GRE); however, those schools may waive this requirement under certain conditions. In the event that the applicant speaks English as the second language or attended colleges that taught classes in languages other than English, TOEFL or other English-language proficiency test scores may be required for admission.

The graduate schools in Georgia that offer master of social work degrees allow students to select from a variety of degree and specialization paths. Graduates can use their degrees to pursue positions in such areas as substance abuse, crisis counseling, and geriatric social work.
