Master's in Spiritual Psychology

What do you need to do to get into a master's in spiritual psychology program? What can you expect to do with the degree after? This article will walk you through these details to help you see if this is the right program for you!

What Can You Expect From a Master's in Spiritual Psychology Program?

Spiritual psychology programs offer students a variety of courses, with many programs offering experiences entirely unique to the program so be sure to analyze each program carefully to see which one is right for you. Spiritual psychology can be its own degree, or a specialization within a Masters of Arts in Psychology program. On average, the degree takes approximately two years to complete.

Mindfulness

This course seeks to analyze the link between the body and the mind. These courses look to educate you on how to integrate mindfulness into your own practice, both when teaching and treating patients. You may also be taught how to use mindfulness as a tool of self-reflection to develop and improve your practice.

Spiritual Development

These courses look to explore how the psycho-spiritual influences the stages and all areas of your life. You will study themes of life that occur through various life stages and geographic areas and their spiritual aspects, to allow you to have some assessment as to what may be impacting the life of the patient. You may also be given techniques to prescribe to patients that work in harmony with the patient's stage in his or her spiritual development.

Psychopathology

A course like this will give you guidance through the process of diagnosing psychological illnesses using the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). You may be instructed in how to assess symptoms and the vocabulary needed to professionally communicate with colleagues and understand any new developments in the field.

Creativity as Treatment

You will explore creative therapy options for your patients and how creativity can be used as or as part of a treatment plan. This may mean exploring therapy options in art, music, writing, or other creative outlets. You may learn how and when to apply these treatment plans and the many options that are available to your patients, as well as the psychological benefits creativity can have on patients.

Transpersonal Psychology

Here you will study much of the foundation of transpersonal psychology. You may be given opportunities to study its history and learn about many of the main figures of the field, as well as what is currently being explored in the area. You may learn how to apply these schools of thought into your practice, and when to use the techniques you learn.

Admission Requirements for a Master's in Spiritual Psychology

You are likely to need your transcripts from your previous postsecondary educational experiences. Many programs also expect you to have completed a bachelor's degree. You should find at least two people who will be willing to write letters of recommendation; generally, these letters will come from academic or professional references. You will also have to write a statement of purpose, which usually explains why you want to enter the program and what you hope to achieve during the program and after you are done. You likely will also have to provide an up-to-date resume. If you get through the initial evaluation, you may be asked to attend an interview.

A master's in spiritual psychology can give you many paths in terms of a career. When preparing your application, be sure to have your transcripts and letters of recommendation. Remember that every program offers a unique set of courses, and while there are some similarities do not be afraid to explore multiple options to find the best fit for you.
