Master's Programs in Civil Engineering in California

Several schools throughout California have master's degree programs in civil engineering that can be completed in one or two years. This article discusses several of these programs' concentration options, and average cost per year.

California Baptist University

California Baptist University has a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program that consists of 30 units of coursework and allows students to customize their learning experience with a variety of elective courses. Students can complete the program in two years of full-time study and can take courses in sustainable civil engineering, water chemistry, and design in environmental engineering.

California State Polytechnic University - Pomona

Students at California State Polytechnic University - Pomona can earn a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with one of five concentrations: structural engineering, construction engineering and management, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, or environmental and water resources. The program consists of 30 units of coursework completed through evening and late afternoon classes and takes around two years to complete.

California State University - Fresno

California State University - Fresno has a Master of Science in Civil Engineering program that consists of 30 semester hours of coursework and offers three degree track options: a comprehensive exam, thesis and project. The program provides training in a variety of engineering areas, including water resources engineering, geomatics engineering, highway engineering, and soil mechanics and foundation engineering.

California State University - Los Angeles

Students at California State University - Los Angeles can earn a Master of Science in Civil Engineering by completing 30 units of coursework with either a comprehensive exam or a thesis at the end of their program. Students can choose from a variety of courses to customize their education, including classes in steel design, traffic flow analysis, concrete design, and water supply.

Loyola Marymount University

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering program at Loyola Marymount University consists of 30 semester hours of coursework that can be completed in as little as one year. Students can choose a concentration in water resources engineering or environmental engineering.

San Diego State University

San Diego State University has a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering program as well as a Master of Science in Civil Engineering program. The MSCE program consists of at least 30 units of coursework and offers a concentration in environmental engineering as well as specializations in construction engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, and transportation engineering.

San Jose State University

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering program at San Jose State University consists of 30 units of coursework with either a thesis, project, or comprehensive exam at the end of the program. Students can take courses once per week in the afternoons and evenings and can choose a concentration in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, or construction engineering.

Santa Clara University

Santa Clara University has a Master of Science in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering program that consists of 45 quarter units with core courses in sustainable construction design, structural analysis, and construction engineering. Students complete coursework and a research or design project and can choose a concentration in general civil engineering, structural engineering, or construction engineering and management.

University of California - Los Angeles

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering program at the University of California - Los Angeles consists of 36 units of coursework through either a thesis or capstone track. Students can choose a concentration in structures and civil engineering materials, structural mechanics, structural/earthquake engineering, environmental and water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, or civil engineering materials.

University of Southern California

The University of Southern California has a Master of Science in Civil Engineering program with specializations in transportation engineering, structural engineering, general (environmental, geotechnical, and water resources), construction engineering and management, and sustainable infrastructure systems (water and waste management or transportation). The program consists of 27 units of coursework, which can be completed in four semesters, and allows students to transfer in up to four units of courses.
