Medical School in Illinois

This article provides information about the medical schools in Illinois and the programs they offer. Read on to learn about the programs, including available degrees, tuition costs and more.

Loyola University, Chicago

Loyola University is home to a joint M.D./Ph.D. that requires seven to eight years to complete, and master of science degrees in the areas of biochemistry and molecular biology, cellular and molecular oncology, integrative cell biology, neuroscience, cell and molecular physiology, molecular pharmacology and therapeutics. The university is also home to the Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences (IPBS), a Ph.D. with tracks in biochemistry and molecular biology, integrative cell biology, neuroscience, microbiology and immunology, cell and molecular physiology, and molecular pharmacology and therapeutics.

Northwestern University

The programs offered at the Northwestern university include an M.D., a Physician Assistant, a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and doctoral research programs in neuroscience, clinical psychology, integrated health sciences and life science. Northwestern is also home to numerous master's research programs including genetic counseling, public health, prosthetics orthotics, health communication, and clinical investigation, to name a few. The university also offers dual degrees like DPT/Ph.D. Engineering, M.D./Ph.D., and M.D./M.P.H.

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science

Rosalind Franklin University offers 16 doctoral degree programs, ten master's programs, and an M.D. program in allopathic medicine. The master's programs are offered in areas like biomedical science, clinical nutrition, nutrition education, population health, health administration and doctoral programs in areas like cell biology and anatomy, microbiology and immunology, neuroscience, and physiology and biophysics. See the table below for the full list.

Rush University

The medical college at Rush University provides a four-year M.D. program; students have the chance to train at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The program is divided into two phases: pre-clerkship and clerkship. This allows students to start interacting with patients within the first few weeks of the program; the program offers clerkships in major areas like internal medicine, psychiatry, obstetrics, neurology, and surgery.

Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale offers only residency and fellowship programs. But these programs are numerous and to list a few, residency programs include pediatrics, dermatology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, psychiatry, radiology, and urology, and fellowship programs include sports medicine, hematology, hand surgery, endocrinology, cardiology, and infectious diseases.

University of Illinois

The major graduate programs offered by the University of Illinois include a Ph.D. program in six specialized research areas of biomedical science (molecular and structural biology, cancer biology, integrative and translational physiology, cell biology and regenerative medicine, microbiology immunity and inflammation and neurobiology) and master's degrees in medical biotechnology, health professions education, patient safety leadership. The university also offers an M.D. and joint degrees like M.D./Ph.D., M.D./MPH, M.D./M.B.A. and M.D./M.S. (in Clinical and Translational Science or Bioengineering).
