MSN Programs in Chicago, Illinois

For an individual who wants to enter a Master of Science in Nursing degree program in Chicago, there are several universities, including DePaul, Loyola and Rush. An MSN prepares students to work as nurses in hospitals, clinics and medical offices.

DePaul University

The Master of Science in Nursing at DePaul University is designed for current nurses with an RN license and offers four concentrations: Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educator, and Nurse Administration. They also offer a Master's Entry to Nursing Practice (MENP) program intended to prepare students for RN licensure examination (NCLEX-RN).

Loyola University Chicago

There are four specializations available to MSN students at Loyola University's Chicago campus, some with their own sub-specializations; students can choose from these tracks: Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nursing Healthcare Administration, or Infection Prevention. Students are required to complete 2,000 hours of clinical experience before beginning the first practicum experience.

North Park University

There are three tracks of study for students in the Master of Science in Nursing program. This program prepares students for careers as nurse practitioners for families or adult patients, or in nursing leadership. Students in these degree programs are prepared to work in a variety of settings.

Rush University

Aspiring nurses and licensed nurses can find a masters-level degree program to prepare them for certification as clinical nurse leaders. The program for non-RNs includes preparation for the RN licensure exam (the NCLEX), and both programs prepare students to join the healthcare field as advanced care nurses or to continue to doctoral nursing degree programs. There are part- and full-time options, as well as on-campus or online programs.

Saint Xavier University

At Saint Xavier University, registered nurses have an opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Nursing with three tracks: family nurse practitioner, executive nurse leadership, and clinical nurse leadership. These degree programs combine clinical experience with online study that can prepare nurses to work in a variety of healthcare settings.

University of Illinois-Chicago

Two degree programs lead to a Master of Science in Nursing at UIC: a program for students who are not registered nurses but have bachelor's degrees in other fields and a desire to become nurses, and another is the MSN for registered nurses. Both of these programs prepare students for careers as advanced generalist nurses who coordinate patient care in medical settings and work outside clinical settings to promote client and family advocacy. The program for non-RNs is a full-time program, while the program for registered nurses is available in full- or part-time formats.

How to Earn a Master of Science in Nursing

All students who want to earn a Master of Science in Nursing in Chicago must have a bachelor's degree, but the degree does not have to be in nursing. A valid license to practice as a registered nurse is often required. Typically, three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae, and a personal statement are also required. Most applicants will have to undergo a background check, and they must provide evidence of compliance with various health requirements, like TB screening, flu shots, immunizations, and a physical examination. A grade point average of at least 3.0 in undergraduate work is typically required as well.

A Master of Science in Nursing prepares students to work as a nurse practitioner for families or older adults, for careers in nursing administration, or to continue on their educational path to a Doctor of Nursing Practice. These programs can take anywhere from three to five years to complete, depending on full-or part-time status, and students benefit from the combination of theoretical learning and the practical experience gained during practicum hours.
