How To Earn a Master's of Science in Nursing

Students who want to earn a Master of Science in Nursing will need to have either a bachelor's degree in nursing and a registered nurse license. Students without these prerequisites can attend a program where they can earn both their master's degree and their RN license at the same time. Some of the classes that a student might take over the course of earning a Master of Science in Nursing degree include pharmacology, pathophysiology, and advanced physiology.

Pharmacology

Pharmacology is designed to teach students about drugs and their interactions with areas of the human body. This course may cover topics like gene therapy, nursing pharmacy, drug classes, and pharmacogenomics. This class may also discuss the Federal Drug Administration and its role in the modern field of pharmacology.

Pathophysiology

Pathophysiology classes will teach students about human physiology, diseases, and other disorders that people may be diagnosed with. As a part of this course, students will learn about the physiological changes a body goes through over time, including illnesses, responses to illnesses, diagnosing illnesses and diseases, and altered health states. In addition, this course may cover the topic of developmental physiology as well.

Advanced Physiology

Advanced physiology is the detailed study of human anatomy and the function of the body and encompasses how diseases affect the functioning of the body. This course can also cover body processes, body defenses, and interactions between different systems in the body. This class will most likely be completed in two different sections including a traditional lecture portion and a laboratory section where students can practice hands-on skills.

Ethics in Nursing

A class in ethics in nursing allows students to understand ethical issues in the nursing field and how to make the best decisions in a variety of circumstances. This class will also teach students about building a moral workplace and caring for patients in an ethical manner. Those who complete this program will know how to meet the wants and needs of patients, be compassionate and respectful, and follow best practices in the industry.

Earning a Master's of Science in Nursing can take anywhere from one to three years, depending on the program and if a student is enrolled full-time or part-time. A handful of schools offer MSN degrees and, in these programs, students might take courses in advanced psysiology, ethics, and pharmacology.
