New Hampshire Alternative Routes to Teacher Licensure

New Hampshire requires all professional school employees to have the appropriate credentials specific to the position for which they were hired. The state has numerous alternative options for teacher certification. Schools offering Teaching & Learning degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Alternative Ways to Become a Certified Teacher in New Hampshire

The traditional path to becoming a certified teacher in New Hampshire requires prospective teachers to complete a bachelor's degree, a professional educator preparation program, and testing. The state has also developed five alternative pathways in which candidates can achieve teacher licensure and be employed as a New Hampshire educator. Find out more about these alternative requirements, testing, and career information below.

State Licensure Pathway: Alternative 1

The first alternative pathway requires the New Hampshire Board of Education to approve a candidate's teacher training program. The Education Department chairperson must also recommend certification for the candidate.

State Licensure Pathway: Alternative 2

Another pathway that the state offers for teacher certification is known as reciprocity, in which the candidate is awarded an Experienced Educator License (EEL). Option A provides for the acceptance of candidates from other states who have graduated from an approved state program. Transcripts documenting program completion will be needed including copies of test scores and any out of state licenses. Reciprocity Option B allows New Hampshire to accept teachers who have been employed as a certified educator in another state for at least three years out of the last seven years. Transcripts, letters from employers and copies of out of state licenses and test scores are also required. If a teacher's certification is from another country, the 'foreign evaluation' process is an option. Experience letters and license information will be needed.

State Licensure Pathway: Alternative 3

This pathway is designed for potential teachers who have not completed a teacher education program but have teaching experience. An extensive written portfolio that documents competence in the certification area must be submitted. Once the portfolio is approved, a half-day oral exam will be given by the Board of Examiners.

Candidates need at least 3 months of teaching experience in their area of endorsement, as well as a bachelor's degree and certification test scores, to start this pathway. Additional experience and education requirements are needed for some areas of endorsement.

State Licensure Pathway: Alternative 4

If a candidate for certification has a bachelor's degree in a critical shortage area, they may apply for a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) and be employed as a teacher while they pursue certification. Each year New Hampshire publishes a list of teaching areas that are identified as critical shortage areas with specific information on required documentation.

State Licensure Pathway: Alternative 5

A final alternative pathway for teacher certification is an on-the-job training option. If the candidate has a bachelor's degree with at least 30 credits in the area in which they want to be certified, they can be issued an Intern License for up to two years. They must work towards regular certification according to a plan of professional development that is developed by the district and the mentor who is supervising the candidate.

Testing Requirements

Candidates must show they have basic academic skills by getting passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. New Hampshire offers alternative ways to meet this requirement by submitting passing scores on an out of state test comparable to the Praxis or submitting scores from national tests like SAT, GRE or ACT that document results at or above the 50th percentile for reading, writing and mathematics. Subject area assessments may also be required to document core subject area competency. The New Hampshire Department of Education defines what subjects are core.
