Job Description

Substitute teachers fill in for regular teachers at New Hampshire's public or private schools. They follow lesson plans left behind by the classroom teacher. Substitute teachers may also perform other duties normally done by the regular teacher, such as maintaining order during students' lunch and performing hall monitoring duties.

Substitutes primarily spend their days indoors. However, depending on the weather and time of year, substitutes may be expected to spend part of their work day outside. This is particularly true for substitutes teachers of physical education or classes that have daily recess.

Educational Requirements

Each school district in New Hampshire sets their own educational requirements for substitute teachers. Most school districts require that substitute teachers only have a high school diploma or GED. However, some do require that substitutes have completed two years of full-time college education. One will have to check with the school district where they intend to teach to determine educational requirements.

Background Check Requirements

The state of New Hampshire requires that all school employees undergo a criminal background check. This includes substitute teachers. The background check consists of a criminal history check and fingerprinting with the New Hampshire State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Certain crimes, such as homicide and those involving children, will result in one not being permitted to work for a school or other educational institution. The fee for the background check is $54.25.

Certification Requirements

Most school districts in New Hampshire do not require substitute teachers to have a teaching license or certification. However, some schools do require that long-term substitutes be 'Highly Qualified Teachers,' which means they possess teaching certification. Short-term substitutes do not generally require a teaching certificate.

School districts may require that applicants be a certain minimum age (21). Furthermore, prospective substitutes may need to deliver transcripts of college education and submit letters of recommendation. The application process is generally completed through the website of each district.

Pay Information

Substitute teachers are usually paid based on the number of days they work, not the number of hours worked nor an annual wage. This rate can vary based on the school district that one works for. Typically, school districts in New Hampshire pay more to substitute teachers with a teaching certification compared to substitute teachers who do not have certification. Districts may offer a bonus to substitute teachers who work a minimum number of days.
