Health psychology courses cover topics such as behavioral and biomedical theories, the effect of psychological, behavioral, and social factors on physical health and wellness, and the study of relationships between patients and providers. Specific cardiovascular and immune diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and HIV/AIDS are discussed. Courses about stress and coping within the realm of health psychology teach students about modern theories on the perception of stress, appraisal of stressors, methods of coping, and the psychophysiological mechanisms involved in the body's responses to stress. Students will learn about and discuss topics such as behavioral nutrition, traumatic stress, chronic pain, and stress-related psychophysiological and medical disorders as they relate to stress and coping. Students should come away from the course with an understanding of how the mind and body connect in stressful situations.
