Online DNP Programs in California

An online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program can be a convenient way for an employed nursing student to pursue a doctorate degree while maintaining their career.

California Baptist University

California Baptist University offers an online DNP program that requires admitted students to make three or four on-campus visitations over the course of the six-semester program. Applicants must have earned a master's degree, have a minimum GPA of 3.3, have CPR certification, proof of health insurance, and current licensure to practice nursing in the state of California.

Western University of Health Sciences

The online DNP program offered by Western University of Health Sciences allows nursing students to earn their doctorate while only spending a total of only a few days on campus for seminars. The entire program requires two years of combined study and clinical practice. Prospective applicants should be prepared to complete at least 1000 clinical practice hours in order to complete this program.

Loma Linda University

Loma Linda University offers both a BSN to DNP hybrid online program. This program offers a specialization in Primary Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (PCAGNP) which culminates in a DNP Project. Applicants are encouraged to have at least one year of experience working as an RN in addition to at least four hours of shadowing experience. A current and valid license in the state of California is also an admission requirement.

Touro University California

Touro University California offers an online DNP program with a specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). Students must complete five semesters of coursework and 630 hours of clinical practice before earning their DNP. They must also successfully research, complete, and present a DNP Project during their final semester of study. This program is mostly online but does require some on-campus attendance per semester.

University of California - Irvine

At the University of California - Irvine nursing students have the option of choosing between a DNP and a DNP (FNP) program. Both programs are hybrid programs as students are required to make one on-campus visit each quarter. This allows them plenty of time to earn the 510 clinical practice hours required to complete this program.

Admittance Requirements for an Online DNP Program in California

Prospective students considering an online DNP program should have earned at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing before applying for admission, although many programs require a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. In addition, common requirements of both programs include a GPA of 3.0 or higher, an active and legal nursing license in the state of California, at least two professional recommendations, and an academic essay. DNP programs may also require the completion of specific prerequisite courses.

Online DNP Program Information and Common Courses

Students enrolled in an online DNP program in California can earn a doctorate degree without physically attending class, allowing employed nurses the opportunity to continue their education in nursing. There are several degree specializations typically available within an online DNP program including Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Most online DNP programs last between five and eleven semesters, depending on the required curriculum of that specific program. It's common for a DNP program to culminate in a research-driven DNP Project.

Leadership in Modern Health Care Systems

A leadership in modern health care systems course is often required for students enrolled in a DNP program. In this course, common topics include identifying one's own leadership type, understanding managerial roles and responsibilities, and practicing proper communication techniques with coworkers and patients. A leadership course such as this typically focuses on developing a student's interpersonal skills while engaged in a modern nursing environment.

Epidemiology

Students taking a course in epidemiology are likely to study a wide range of topics related to disease and the spread of disease. Typical focus areas include the factors that determine the rate of contamination within a population, and key determinants that define a population's health. Additional topics may include the impact of political bias, common health screening procedures, and ethical issues within the field of epidemiology.

Advanced Pharmacology

An advanced pharmacology course builds upon students' previous pharmacological knowledge. Advanced topics commonly include pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, modern drug therapy techniques, and understanding the modern drug class system. There are some advanced pharmacology courses that also feature a lab portion, requiring students to physically practice while under strict supervision.

Advanced Pathophysiology

A course in advanced pathophysiology focuses on preparing students to diagnose the physical ailments of possible diseases of patients. Pathophysiologic causes for illnesses are often explored in this course, as are evidence-based treatment procedures for specific diseases or disparities. An advanced pathophysiology course can help prepare nurses to make efficient and effective diagnoses and provide the correct treatment to help ease their patient's discomfort.

Students in pursuit of an online DNP program in California have several schools and programs from which to choose. Courses may differ, but DNP students typically take courses in leadership, pharmacology, physiology, and epidemiology.
