Online DNP Programs in Florida

An online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program can be an excellent way to further your medical education while maintaining a flexible schedule. Online DNP programs are available to those with either a bachelor's degree or a master's degree.

Admittance Requirements for an Online DNP Program in Florida

Prospective students seeking admittance into an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program will need to satisfy a few common requirements before they are accepted. Typically, these requirements include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, a GPA of 3.0 or higher, a valid RN license, three letters of recommendation, and an academic essay. Some online programs may require that prospective applicants have more than a baccalaureate degree and require their students to hold a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

Degree Information for Online DNP Programs in Florida

Online DNP programs can provide a flexible schedule for students with multiple obligations, and programs can be completed in two to seven years, depending on whether the student has earned a BSN or MSN before admittance into a DNP program. Though most online DNP programs in Florida consist primarily of online courses, such as the following examples, many programs do require students to occasionally attend a lecture, lab component, or exam in person.

Leadership Roles in Healthcare

Students enrolled in an online DNP program are typically not exempt from taking a course in leadership. Topics covered in this course might include identifying personal leadership styles, recognizing managerial communication techniques, and exercising leadership qualities in a healthcare environment. Upon successful completion of this course, students could have a greater understanding of interpersonal and operational systems in a healthcare system.

Healthcare Policy and Politics

This course often takes a look at the role that the modern political system has in healthcare policy. Students might explore the various sectors of the public and private healthcare systems, the political policy-making process, and the factors that play into these policies. Understanding the interconnected nature of healthcare and politics might be a primary goal of this course.

Advanced Pharmacology

A course in advanced pharmacology naturally builds on previous knowledge of pharmacological theory and practice. Typical topics covered in this course may include pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug therapy practices. Students should gain a greater understanding of the practicality of pharmacology within the healthcare field.

Clinical Practicum

Before a student can graduate with a DNP, they must prove that they have an abundance of clinical experience. Students who do not have the means to acquire these clinical hours outside of school often have the option to include them as part of their curriculum. Clinical practicums allow students to perform patient diagnoses and treatments while under supervision, thereby earning their clinical hours while practicing their role as a nurse.

DNP Project

The culmination of most DNP programs, online or not, is the DNP project. Students are typically required to choose a research topic related to the medical field and explore that topic over the course of many weeks or months. An advisor or faculty member is often assigned to students completing their DNP project, as it requires a tremendous amount of research and organization. Unless the student has failed to meet other requirements for graduation, they usually complete their degree after successfully presenting a DNP project.

Florida International University

Florida International University offers an online DNP program that consists of 36 course credits, a clinical residency, and a DNP project. Applicants must have a master's degree or post-graduate certification in nursing to be considered for admittance and a GPA of 3.25 or greater, but GRE scores are not required.

Florida State University

Florida State University offers an online DNP program with the option to specialize as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP), with credit requirements ranging from 46-79, depending on background and choice of program. Admitted students must visit the Tallahassee campus about five times over the course of the program; however, most of the courses must be completed online via interactive virtual lectures.

University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida offers a fully-online post-master's DNP program and a hybrid online program for BSN to DNP students. The post-master's DNP program offers two areas of specialization, including Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and Nurse Executive. The BSN to DNP programs offer three areas of specialization, including Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP).

University of Florida

The University of Florida in Gainesville offers two DNP programs that require minimal campus visitation. The BSN to DNP program consists of 75-78 course credits and offers five specialization tracks to pursue, while the MSN to DNP program consists of only 35 course credits but does not offer any areas of specialization. Both programs culminate in a rigorous DNP project.

University of South Florida

The University of South Florida in Tampa offers two options for students seeking their DNP, but only one of these options is primarily online. The MS to DNP program offers the most flexible online courses, allowing students to take nearly all of the major six courses online, while the BS to DNP program offers only a few of the core classes online. Full-time students can expect to take anywhere between 3 and 8 semesters to complete the program, depending on their previous degree level.
