Online Master's Degree Programs in Social Work in Florida
For students who wish to complete a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) online, there are three institutions that offer this type of program in Florida. Without stepping a foot on campus, students can achieve full accreditation in this competitive field.
Florida State University
Florida State University offers an online MSW degree with two separate streams, including a two year program for those who already have a Bachelor's of Social Work and a three year program for those with a Bachelor's degree in another major. Even with an online program, students are able to complete an in-person clinical placement, which will prepare them for a career as a clinical social worker. Students who already have a Bachelor's in Social Work can complete their degree fully online, while those who do not have a Bachelor's in Social Work will be required to come to campus for two weekends of skills development.
University of Central Florida
Students can complete the online MSW by completing 62 credit hours, in a part-time form of study. Students can choose from the general part-time program, which is designed for those without a Bachelor's of Social Work, or the part-time advanced MSW for students who have previously graduated from a Bachelor's of Social Work program. Throughout this program, students will complete courses related to working with clients from diverse populations, applying clinical social working practices to LGBTQ+ individuals and working with families. By the end of these programs, students will have the skills required to promote overall wellbeing in a variety of marginalized populations and advocate for different policies related to social justice.
University of South Florida
University of South Florida provides an online MSW, with two options. The Advanced standing option is tailored to those who have a Bachelor's in Social Work, while the standard MSW is designed for those who have a Bachelor's degree in a different field of study. Students can choose whether to complete their online degree on a part-time or full-time basis and upon graduation, will be prepared to enter the workforce as a social work generalist. Throughout the program, students will gain a better understanding of different human populations and their needs, allowing them to apply theory to their professional practice once they complete their degree.

Master of Social Work Admittance Requirements
Any student who wishes to complete a Master of Social Work must first complete an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, in either Social Work or another related field of study (preferably Liberal Arts). For those who have previously completed a Bachelors in Social Work within the last five years, they can qualify for the Advanced Standing MSW programs. Within most programs, students are required to submit their GRE scores, and some institutions require a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their undergraduate social work courses to be considered for admission. Students should provide their school of choice with a letter of intent and/or resume, as well as an official transcript from their undergraduate institution.
Finally, while this is not a mandatory requirement for admission, it may also be beneficial for a student to have at least one year's experience, upon graduation from their undergraduate degree, in a social work agency. This should be highlighted within their resume and will help them stand out in this competitive process.
What Can You Do With a Master in Social Work?
A Group Facilitator works within a variety of clinical settings, often collaborating closely with clinic directors to create programming and activities that promote treatment and therapy for patients. Often times, this role involves documenting patient health history and behavior, as well as ensuring all health charts are current. Those with a MSW are well prepared for this role, as they will be able to tailor their style of treatment to the different individuals within these group-care environments.
Child, Family, and School Social Worker
Child, family, and school social workers work in a variety of settings, including day cares, group homes, schools and clinics to aid in the overall wellbeing of children and their families. The goal of this role is to ensure children develop physically and emotionally and have the tools they need to be successful in their education. An MSW would ensure that candidates for this role understand children's developmental stages and have the skills required to work with marginalized populations.
Substance Abuse Counselor
A substance abuse counselor can provide support to those going through recovery from a variety of addictions, including gambling, behavioral, food and drugs. Within their role, these counselors would design the recovery plan based on the needs of the client and support them with coping mechanisms, open communication and trust. For this role, candidates require skills in active listening, dispute resolution and group therapy, which can all be gained through the completion of a MSW.
