Although there may be other degrees available, such as a Master of Professional Studies (MPS), many online master's degree programs in data analytics are available as a Master of Science (MS) programs and can be completed in as little as 12 to 15 months. These degree programs typically culminate in a capstone experience, which can consist of a final project that applies analytics to an area of the student's choosing, and some programs may offer various degree specializations in areas such as cyber security, human resource performance, accounting, or information technology. Many online master's degree programs in data analytics can be completed fully online, require 30 to 36 credits, and may include courses in some of the more common topics listed and discussed below in greater detail.

Data Mining

These courses generally allow students to gain hands-on experience with data mining software as they learn about methodologies in the field and why data mining is beneficial. Specific topics for these courses may include logistic regression analysis, data cubes, neural networks, cluster analysis, and logistic regression. Students who take a course on data mining may also explore topics in visualization. These courses can cover concepts like visual data representation, pattern analysis, and computer graphics.

Data Analytics

Some programs may offer an introductory course in data analytics and/or an advanced course in the subject. Introductory courses explore the foundational concepts and methodologies in data analytics that are drawn from areas like statistics and information systems and may cover topics in forecasting, optimization, and inference. Advanced courses could train students in advanced analytic methods using case studies and projects. Some advanced courses in data analytics may be used as the introduction to a student's capstone experience.

Decision Making

It is common for these degree programs to include a course that helps train students in the use of data modeling techniques for decision making. Some of these courses focus on interpreting analytics for the application to real-world problems, while others may take on a broader approach and look at topics like data trends, risk assessment, and analytics algorithms. Primarily, these courses are designed to help students learn how to examine data in context, interpret data, and apply information to make informed decisions.

Predictive Analytics

Generally, predictive analytics courses examine how analytics are applied to business and may build upon concepts in decision-making and modeling courses. Specific topics for predictive analytics courses may include creating predictive models, identifying variables with the most power, and utilizing current predictive models. Students might also take advanced courses on the use of predictive analytics for a specific sector or area of focus, such as socio-technical systems.

Data Warehousing

Some master's degree programs in data analytics include a course that explores large-scale data storage technologies for data within an enterprise and how data management can contribute to an organization's success.
