A Master's in Business Administration degree is a popular way to increase job prospects, salary and workplace advancement as it prepares students for leadership roles. Traditional programs for an MBA require prospective students to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), but many online MBA programs offer a pathway to admission without GMAT scores.

California State University Monterey Bay

The online MBA program requires at least one year of professional experience in place of a GMAT. Geared toward working professionals, the 38-credit program can be completed in 18 months and includes coursework covering responsible leadership, decision-making for managers, economics and marketing.

California State University San Bernadino

Although the traditional MBA program requires a GMAT score, the online MBA program instead requires applicants to have at least five years of professional or managerial experience. The program is geared toward mid-level managers and takes about 18 months to complete with electives in entrepreneurship, human resources, negotiation and project management.

California Southern University

Cal Southern's program includes a degree focus in several areas, including human resources, international business, strategic leadership, healthcare administration and project management. The program, which requires 36 credits for completion, can be completed in 18 months to two years.

Azusa Pacific University

The Christian university can waive the GMAT requirement for candidates with an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher or those who already hold a master's degree. The 42-credit program includes courses such as institutional research, international business, entrepreneurship and sport management.

California Baptist University

The Riverside university offers online MBA programs with concentrations in accounting and general management. The program, which can be completed in a year, includes foundational courses in entrepreneurial management, organizational behavior and managerial ethics.

California Lutheran University

The Cal Lutheran program, which requires 45 credits and takes between a year and two years to complete, may waive the GMAT requirement for candidates with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. The online MBA degree is available only as a general degree; however, specializations are available on-campus.

John F. Kennedy University

The private nonprofit program in the Bay Area offers an online MBA, among other programs, for a flat rate of $8,500 per year through its 'FlexCourse' system. Students in the program, which requires 36 credits for completion, can specialize in finance, human resources, health care, information technology or sales or strategic management.

Notre Dame de Namur University

The online program, which requires a 2.5 or better undergraduate GPA, can be completed in two years on a part-time basis. Three concentrations for the 36-credit program are offered: finance, human resources and marketing management.

Pepperdine University

Students who wish to enroll in the online MBA program may have the GMAT requirement waived for several reasons, including three years of full-time work experience. The 52-unit program course requirements include accounting, financial management, leadership development, marketing management and the market economy.

University of Redlands

The university offers four concentrations in the online MBA program without a GMAT requirement: finance, general business, location analytics and marketing. The 48-credit program can be completed in 18 or 24 months and students can take one course at a time, including investment theory, marketing management, accounting for managers and a capstone project.

Admission Requirements to Online MBA Programs Without a GMAT

California universities that waive GMAT scores look for other indicators of success before granting admission to online MBA programs. Admission requirements typically include the following:

  • Bachelor's degree and a high GPA from an accredited college or university,
  • Letters of recommendation, including one from a current or former employer,
  • A personal statement detailing goals, motivation, and qualifications,
  • Resume of work experience, and,
  • Experience of at least a year, preferably more, in the business world.
