Requirements for a Single-Subject Teaching Credential

The most basic requirement is to have completed a bachelor's or higher degree. Once you have satisfied this, you need to verify that you satisfy the basic skills requirement by taking an examination such as the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Once you have done this, you need to demonstrate subject matter competence by either passing a relevant subject-matter examination, or by completing an approved subject-matter program. You also need to demonstrate knowledge of the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution.

However, the major part of the requirement is the completion of a teacher preparation program, along with furnishing a formal recommendation for the credential by the program sponsor.

Single-Subject Teaching Credential Programs Online

A single-subject teaching credential program prepares you to be a classroom teacher. It combines a variety of elements to ensure you are equipped to do this, and teaches important skills such as applying subject matter in a classroom setting, designing learning experiences, implementing effective techniques for classroom management, tailoring instruction to suit the differently-abled, conducting assessments, and so on. Any Commission-approved program should include a fieldwork component, which includes field placement, supervised teaching, and an internship.

It is important to note that while a teaching credential program prepares you to be eligible for a credential, the final process of obtaining the credential, including appearing for the mandatory qualifying exams and completing the required paperwork, may still be solely your responsibility.

When You Can Join a Single-Subject Teaching Credential Program

You usually enter the single-subject teaching credential program after earning your bachelor's degree. This is one of the requirements to join most programs. Programs may also require you to have obtained a minimum GPA in your previous education. Other requirements vary vastly among teaching credential programs, but may likely include a statement of purpose, one or more recommendations, passage of basic skills tests, and registration for subject matter examinations. There may be further requirements for international applicants, such as TOEFL scores for those coming from non-English speaking countries.

The Early Completion Intern Teaching Option

California offers prospective teachers the Early Completion Intern Teaching Option. The CTC requires all intern teaching programs to provide this option. Availing of this option means that you can become a classroom teacher much earlier than otherwise expected, and that your teacher preparation coursework will be highly abridged. It also implies that you have the required skills and knowledge to take responsibility for a classroom. For this reason, there are specific requirements to be met, including passage of the National Evaluation Series (NES) Assessment of Professional Knowledge (APK) Secondary test and completion of the required Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) tasks, in addition to the requirements for obtaining a single-subject credential through the regular path, as well as having an offer of employment while being part of an approved intern program.
