When to Renew Your Oregon Teaching License

Oregon has different policies regarding the length of a teaching license. You should check the state's website to determine exactly how long your license will last when you first receive it. For example, a Restricted Career and Technical Education (CTE) License, issued to people who have not yet met the requirements for a Preliminary CTE License, will only last for one year. Meanwhile, a Professional Teaching License does not have to be renewed until five years after it is issued. State legislation may change the terms of each license upon passing through the hands of lawmakers.

How to Renew Your Oregon Teaching License

Your renewal for a teaching license is submitted through the education department's website. In most cases, the cost of renewal is $182, including professional teaching, school psychologist, and substitutes. If your license has expired for more than three years, you'll need to go through another background check, which includes fingerprinting. Make sure that you submit your renewal application six months or more before the required date of renewal. If you have supporting documents to send with your renewal, ensure that they are included with your application.

Continuing Education Requirements for Renewing an Oregon Teaching License

Renewing many types of Oregon licenses requires you to attend classes for professional development units (PDUs) and typically you will need 75 credits to renew a three-year license, and 125 to renew a license for five years. Oregon counts a quarter hour of college courses as 20 PDUs and a semester as 30. Continuing education courses are available throughout Oregon's colleges and universities, sometimes as certificate programs, which you can attend in person, or take them at your own pace through several different online formats. When you have completed your PDU obligation, check with your employing school district to determine how to verify your completion.

Renewing an Expired Oregon Teaching License

If your license has lapsed, you will need to take additional PDU courses before you can begin teaching again. For each full calendar year that your license is expired, Oregon requires an additional 25 PDU credits, with a maximum of 150 additional PDU courses at six or more years. These must be finished within five years of the day you apply for your license to meet reinstatement eligibility. This rule does not apply to substitute teachers or those on a restricted substitute teaching license.
