Columbia University

Columbia University's Master of Arts in Sociology program is an intensive, one-year program that allows students to specialize in political sociology. During the program, students are required to take 12 courses, including 'classical theory' and 'qualitative methods'. Students are able to take three elective courses to pursue their interests, including political sociology. Prospective students are required to submit their resumes, statements of academic purpose, writing samples, GRE test scores, official transcripts, and three letters from people who are able to assess their academic potential. Graduates of the M.A. program go on to enroll in Ph.D. programs, work in corporate positions such as finance and human resources, and work for international organizations.

Boston University

Boston University's Master of Arts in Sociology program requires students to complete five core courses in subjects such as 'classical theory', 'contemporary theory', and a 'proseminar in methods'. Students are then required to complete three elective courses in a subject that they wish to specialize in, such as political sociology. Applications to the M.A. program must include the department's graduate application, your official transcripts, a personal statement clarifying your academic goals, a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic work. While there is no specific timetable to complete the degree, students are required to complete the M.A. program within three years though it is possible to complete the degree in one year. Graduates of the M.A. program proceed to work in positions such as government administrative jobs, research departments, and community programs.

University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill's M.A. program in sociology requires students to select two areas of concentration, which can include political sociology, as they must take a written exam about the two areas of concentration before graduation. The program requires students to complete 30 credit hours and has three required courses, including a methodology course and a research paper and its defense. The M.A. program has a required residency period of two years, and the department only admits students who wish to also earn their Ph.D.s. Applicants to the program must apply directly to the Ph.D. program and the application must include the department's completed online application, official transcripts, GRE scores, a personal statement of your goals, a writing sample, and three letters from individuals who can attest to your academic abilities. Graduates of the M.A. program who proceed to complete their doctorate often work at academic institutions in positions such as university professor.

California State University - Fullerton

California State University - Fullerton's M.A. in Sociology is a 1- to 2-year program that allows students to concentrate in political sociology. Students must complete 30 hours of coursework, 12 credit hours of which are electives. Required coursework includes courses in social behavior and research methods. Applicants must send the university's completed application form, official transcripts, three recommendation letters, a writing sample, and a statement of purpose. Graduates of the program go on to work in public health organizations, law firms, and survey and polling organizations.
