Psychology Graduate Degree Programs in Iowa

Iowa colleges and universities offer graduate psychology degrees in a variety of disciplines. University of Northern Iowa

At the University of Northern Iowa, the Master of Arts in Psychology program offers emphases in either clinical science or social psychology, along with the opportunity to create a personalized degree plan that includes courses from both areas, such as evolution, brain, and social behavior; research and utilization of psychotherapy; advanced child psychopathology; and evidence-based methods. The university also offers a 60-credit Master of Arts in Counseling degree that has concentrations in either clinical mental health counseling or school counseling, with program coursework covering areas such as working with children and adolescents, crisis and trauma intervention, and working with couples and families.

University of Iowa

The University of Iowa offers the following six graduate degrees in psychology: a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology and Learning Sciences; a PhD in Educational Psychology and Learning Sciences; a PhD in Counseling Psychology; a PhD in Couple and Family Therapy; and a PhD and EdS in School Counseling. The PhD in Counseling Psychology program focuses on a scientist/practitioner model of training and requires at least 103 credits that includes 15 core credits in basic psychology courses, 16 credits in research courses, 36 core credits on counseling psychology topics, and a minimum 18-credit practicum at the university's counseling center, followed by five practicums at partner sites.

Loras College

Students can enroll in one of Loras College's three master's-level programs: Master of Arts in Counseling, Master of Arts in General Psychology, and Master of Arts in School Counseling. To give students a better idea of the programs, the Master of Arts in General Psychology curriculum consists of 39 credits, with 18 credits in core courses such as human growth and development, research and program evaluation, and cultural and social diversity. There are also 21 credits in elective courses, such as working with groups, physiological psychopathology, and the psychology of stress and coping mechanisms.

Iowa State University

Iowa State University has a doctoral psychology program that has concentrations in cognitive psychology, counseling psychology, and social psychology, with graduate students choosing a faculty mentor upon entering the program who will provide them with an opportunity to participate in research projects during their first year of study. The university also has a 13-credit Graduate Certificate in Quantitative Psychology program that offers courses in such areas as applied categorical data analysis, advanced causal modeling, modern psychometric methods, and multilevel modeling for behavioral and social psychology.

Admissions Criteria for Iowa Graduate Psychology Degree Programs

Applicants will need at least a bachelor's degree to apply for a psychology graduate program in the state of Iowa. Some of the programs require a general graduate school application along with a separate psychology department application. Applicants should expect to provide either their official or unofficial transcripts, especially for graduate programs that require a minimum grade point average (GPA), such as a 3.0.
