Education Requirements

In order to teach at the middle or high school level, students must obtain at least a bachelor's degree. Additionally, students must complete a state-approved teacher preparation program.

Because there is no certification specifically for psychology teachers, students should pursue training in social studies. Many state universities offer bachelor's degrees in secondary education, which combine the necessary education courses with the necessary subject area courses through a social studies concentration. This curriculum can provide both psychology and social studies knowledge, and graduates can be employed to teach a range of subjects, including psychology, geography, history, and sociology.

These teacher preparation programs also require student teaching, which satisfies the one-year residency requirement set forth by the state of Louisiana. The residency must be completed prior to applying for certification.

State Examinations

Louisiana requires all aspiring teachers to pass a series of exams, including a basic skills test, a content exam, and a principles of teaching exam.

To fulfill the basic skills test requirement, students must take the Praxis CORE Academic Skills for Educators series. The series is made up of three parts: reading, writing, and math. In order to pass, students must obtain scores of at least 156 for reading, 162 for writing, and 150 for math. High enough SAT or ACT scores can also be used to meet the basic skills requirement.

The Praxis content exam assesses applicants' subject area knowledge. To earn certification to teach social studies topics, including psychology, the Praxis Social Studies: Content and Interpretation test is required. The passing score for this test is 160.

Finally, students must also take and pass the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching: 7-12 exam in order to become certified to teach at the middle school or high school level. To pass, students need at least a score of 157.

Application for Licensure

After obtaining a bachelor's degree, completing a teacher preparation program with a student teaching residency, and passing the three exams, students can apply for their certification with the Louisiana Department of Education. The applications are submitted online and cost $50 to process.
