Job Description

English teachers take on different responsibilities across several levels of education. You might teach students the basics of grammar and spelling in elementary school, while high school seniors can learn about literary analysis and document formatting for their future in universities and the professional world. You can teach your students about different styles of essays and how to summarize passages from selections of text. You could oversee standardized tests they are required to take, as well as your own exams you create to determine their progress.

Education and Training Requirements

The degree you earn for teaching English will directly relate to the grade you want to choose for your teaching career. All education degrees should include a teaching internship, allowing you to instruct a classroom with a supervised educator providing assistance. English falls under the general curriculum of a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, which also includes courses in science and math. A Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades English Language Arts is a bit more focused, and may include another emphasis in one subject such as social studies. Choosing a Bachelor of Science in English, Secondary Education places the emphasis solely on education and English courses.

Exam Requirements

Before starting a student teaching program, you will need to pass a basic skills assessment. This can be fulfilled with the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. You can take the series of three tests (reading, math, and writing) in one appointment, or you can schedule each test during a separate session. Elementary education graduates will need to pass the Pearson Foundations of Reading exam, along with the Praxis Elementary Education: Content Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics CKT test. For middle school students, there is the Middle School English Language Arts test, and high school English teachers can take both the English Language Arts: Content Knowledge and Principles of Teaching and Learning: Grades 7-12 exams.

License Requirements

Once you have successfully passed all of the required exams and completed your education program, North Carolina can issue your Professional Educator's Initial License. You can teach in the state with this credential for three years, after which you need to update your license to a higher level. Teachers who have been licensed and experienced for three years or more can apply for the Professional Educator's Continuing License, which you can earn after becoming National Board certified or by passing additional North Carolina-approved tests. You can renew the Continuing License every five years with the appropriate number of continuing education credits.
