Specific School District Application Requirements

To become a substitute teacher in Delaware, applicants must first pick what school district they'd like to work at or look for available positions at school districts. The district will provide the specific requirements it asks of substitute teachers. Applicants will likely be asked to fill out an online application. Through the online application, they may also be asked to provide references and documents like a photo ID and Social Security card.

Some school districts may have an age requirement. They may require teachers to complete substitute teacher training or orientation. In addition, some school districts use third-party companies to hire substitute teachers, so applicants will have to apply directly through those companies.

Required Education

Delaware schools will likely ask for substitute teachers to have a high school diploma or equivalent but prefer that they have a bachelor's degree. School districts may require a bachelor's degree for long-term substitute teacher positions. Candidates will likely be asked to submit a transcript when applying for a job.

Tuberculosis Test

According to Delaware state law, substitute teachers, like other school employees, are required to get a tuberculosis screening to prove they test negative for the illness. They must show proof of test results from a healthcare provider or the state's public health department. If applicants have already had a tuberculosis test, they may be able to show those results if the test was within the timeframe specified by the school district.

Background Checks

Prospective substitute teachers will also be required to get fingerprinted for a state and federal background check at a Delaware State Police location or show results from a background check less than a year old. With continuous employment (at least 45 days per year), the background check is valid for five years. Locations and hours are listed on the Delaware State Police website. The total fee is $65 as of 2019, and payment options vary by location.

Out-of-state applicants have the option to send fingerprints to the Delaware State Police by mail. In addition, as part of this background check, the state Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families will complete a child protection registry check. This check verifies the applicant does not have a record of child abuse or neglect.
