Educational Requirements

A teacher assistant, or paraprofessional, is required to meet educational standards set forth in the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act. At minimum, you will need a high school diploma or GED to work as one. In Oklahoma, you have four ways to meet the additional education requirements:

  • Complete an associate's degree or higher
  • Complete a minimum of 48 college credits (two years)
  • Successfully pass the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET)
  • Earn a score of 455 (minimum) on the Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Test

Teacher Assistant Testing Requirements

As outlined above, there are two tests you can choose from in order to work as a teaching assistant in Oklahoma. A brief description of each test is provided below.

Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET)

The Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET) is administered via computer and consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and one writing assignment. It is offered throughout the year and will take four hours to complete. You will need to earn at least a score of 240 in order to pass.

Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Test

The Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Test demonstrates your proficiency in math, writing, and reading. There are 90 multiple-choice questions that are a mix of basic knowledge and application. You will have two-and-a-half hours to complete the test. Testing locations include various school districts, regional education centers, and other educational agencies. The state of Oklahoma requires that you earn a score of 455 or better in order to pass.

Special Education Teacher Assistants

You will need to meet further requirements if you wish to work as a special education teacher assistant. In addition to the basic requirements, you will need to complete the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Training. You will also need to complete training in universal health precautions, bloodborne pathogens, CPR, and first aid.

Teacher Assistant Credentialing & Renewal

You can pursue the credential of a Title I Paraprofessional via the Oklahoma State Department of Education. The credentialing process includes a fingerprint check and fee, application processing fee, and documentation illustrating you meet the educational requirements.

Once you obtain a Title I Paraprofessional credential, you will never have to renew it. The credential will be valid for the duration of your life. In addition, the credential does not have any continuing education requirements that need met in order to maintain it. The exception is for special education teacher assistants, who must complete six hours of professional development and universal precautions/bloodborne pathogen training each year.
