Education Requirements

All certification candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and complete a Connecticut-approved teacher preparation program. In general, candidates must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75. You can both complete your bachelor's degree as part of formal teacher preparation, or join a preparation program after completing your bachelor's degree. The Teach Connecticut website has a directory of approved preparation programs with additional information on the application process, location, tuition, and financial aid for each individual program. As part of formal teacher preparation, you will complete additional coursework in art, gain hands-on training in teaching in a classroom setting, and complete a teaching portfolio for the edTPA assessment.

Required Assessments

Candidates for the Art (PreK-12) initial educator certificate must complete both an edTPA assessment and a Praxis II examination. The edTPA assessment is completed as part of teacher preparation and involves a portfolio review evaluating candidates on a standardized model of lesson planning, instruction, and student assessment frameworks. This examination also involves the video taping of a sample lesson for a detailed evaluation of your teaching techniques.

The Praxis II examination is a standardized test from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) designed for specified teaching areas. Art teacher candidates must complete test 5135 in art content and analysis, and score a 161 or above to pass. Candidates must schedule their testing dates individually through the ETS website. A comprehensive study guide and an online practice test are available on the website.

Application Requirements

If you are applying for your first certification and reside in the state of Connecticut, you are required to submit a paper application. You can still create an online account at the Connecticut Educator Certification System (C.E.C.S.) in order to process payments and check the processing status of your certification (normally processed in 12 weeks or less). Candidates with financial hardship who may not be able to afford the fees associated with application can apply for one of several available need-based scholarships. Check the Teach Connecticut website for a list of these scholarships and their applicable requirements.
