Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

DePaul University

DePaul University has an RN to MSN route which requires registered nurses with an associate's degree to first complete a BSN before proceeding to the MSN component; registered nurses with a non-nursing bachelor's degree can bypass the BSN coursework and instead complete 10 credit hours of bridge courses. Much of the coursework completed as part of the BSN will count towards the MSN requirements. The program consists of online instruction and onsite clinical practice over two to four years, 58 to 61 credits (24 credits towards the BSN, 34-37 credits towards the MSN), and allows students to specialize their Master of Science in nursing in family nurse practitioner, nurse administrator, adult-gerontology nurse practitioner, or nurse educator.

Loyola University, Chicago

At Loyola University Chicago, registered nurses can earn an MSN through the RN to BSN followed by the MSN program. Students will first complete around 30 credits online in their BSN curriculum (about one year), then they can choose an MSN specialization in adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (48 credits), adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (43-46 credits), women's health nurse practitioner (46 credits), family nurse practitioner (50-53 credits), adult-gerontology acute care clinical nurse specialist (39 credits), adult gerontology clinical nurse specialist (38 credits), nursing and healthcare administration (38 credits), or infection prevention (credits to be announced; program is anticipated to begin in 2020).

North Park University

Registered Nurses with an associate's degree in nursing or a nursing diploma can earn an MSN from North Park University in as little as 3 years by completing the RN to BSN program and the MSN program; RNs who have a bachelor's degree in a field outside of nursing can apply directly to the MSN program. The BSN component consists of at least 30 credits and the MSN portion varies based on chosen concentration: adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (54 credits), family nurse practitioner (62 credits), or leadership and management (37 credits).

Resurrection University

The RN to MSN program at Resurrection University enables students to earn both a BSN and an MSN. Students will complete 21 credit hours in the BSN portion of their program and then move onto the MSN, specializing in nurse educator (40 credits), adult gerontological nurse practitioner (48 credits), family nurse practitioner (48 credits), or health systems leadership (37 credits).

Saint Xavier University

At Saint Xavier University, registered nurses with an associate's degree in nursing or a nursing diploma can earn both a BSN and an MSN through a fully-online curriculum. Students may also choose to complete a hybrid MSN/MBA dual degree which requires students to first complete the MSN before completing the 12-course MBA program.

University of Illinois at Chicago

The University of Illinois at Chicago has an MSN program available to RNs who hold a non-nursing bachelor's degree which requires one to three bridge courses to be completed at the start of the program. Career Options for RN to MSN Graduates

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse practitioners typically need a master's degree with a concentration in the same field that they work in. For example, a graduate of an MSN program with a specialization in family nurse practitioner typically works as a family nurse practitioner, because of their education in health assessments and treatment methods across the lifespan. Nurse practitioner duties vary with their specific role and work setting, but typically include primary or collaborative care of patients in certain practices such as pediatrics, family, adult, and women's healthcare.

Clinical Nurse Specialists

Clinical nurse specialists are advanced practice registered nurses who may oversee and plan patient care within clinical practice. Some MSN programs allow students to specialize in clinical nurse specialist, providing students with an understanding of applicable treatments, diseases and injuries, and regulations that apply to CNS roles. Employers may prefer candidates who have completed a master's degree with a clinical nurse focus.

Medical and Health Services Managers

These positions are responsible for various tasks which may include record management, directing and training employees, and performing budgeting tasks for departments or facilities. Many employers prefer candidates with a master's degree in a related field and may require several years of work experience. Nurses who have concentrated their MSN program in leadership are more prepared with the knowledge and skills required for successful leadership and management positions.
