RN to MSN Programs in Texas

If you are already a registered nurse (RN), universities in Texas offer a variety of flexible programs that can allow you to advance your career or move into a new area of nursing by pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN degree). Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

University of Texas - Arlington

The University of Texas at Arlington boasts the largest public college of nursing in the state. Their accelerated online RN to MSN program allows students to earn their BSN and MSN degree simultaneously (while maintaining a full-time nursing job). They offer three separate tracks: MSN Family Nurse Practitioner, MSN Nurse Administrator or MSN Nurse Educator

University of Texas - Houston

UT Houston's Cizik School of Nursing provides pathways for registered nurses with an associate's degree in nursing (ADN) to skip the bachelor's degree program and move directly into a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program. UT Houston offers its classes in online and hybrid formats and keeps class size down to no more than 10 students. They offer two MSN degrees, one for family nurse practitioners and another for nursing leadership and administration.

Texas Woman's University

At Texas Woman's University students (with a valid RN license) have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing science simultaneously, saving time and money by applying some of their credits toward both degrees. The majority of the coursework can be completed online at a flexible pace so that students can work as nurses while they continue their education. They offer four specializations, MSN Clinical Nurse Specialist, MSN Nurse Educator, MSN Nurse Practitioner, and MSN Health Systems Management.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

Texas A&M has a program for students who have an ADN and a bachelor's degree in another field to move straight into an MSN program. They also allow students with an RN license (from an accredited associates program) to bypass the bachelor's degree requirement all-together and earn a master's degree. After completing a few prerequisite undergraduate courses, students move on to choose an MSN specialization from three options: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Administration or Nurse Educator

Lamar University

This program is specifically designed for nurses who wish to move from clinical practice into management and administrative roles by studying strategic management, resource management, leadership skills, and teaching methodologies. Students choose either a nursing administration or nurse educator specialization. This online program allows students with an RN license to earn their BSN and MSN together (students end up taking 9 fewer credit hours than they would if they earned both degrees separately).

University of Texas - Austin

The University of Texas at Austin has two tracks for RN nurses heading back to school to advance their career, one for applicants with a bachelor's degree in nursing science and one for applicants with a bachelor's degree in another field and a valid RN license. Their broad range of concentrations prepares students to increase their clinical skills and salary by becoming an advanced practice nurse practitioner. They offer a wide range of specializations including Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Leadership in Diverse Settings.

West Texas A&M

Students with a valid RN license are qualified to participate in West Texas A&M's comprehensive MSN program where they have the chance to design their own course by choosing from a broad range of electives. Students who pursue this advanced MSN program end up taking fewer classes overall than if they had first earned a BSN before applying to an MSN degree. Alternately, they can choose the Family Nurse Practitioner track and focus more on clinical work and other hands-on experience to become licensed FNPs.
