Abilene Christian University

Abilene has a two-year Master of Science in Social Work program that consists of 64 credit hours, as well as a one-year Advanced Standing MSW program that consists of 38 credit hours. Students will learn to identify and utilize best practices in interventions and policies to assist and empower clients. Students can also pursue a dual degree of MA in Christian Ministry.

Baylor University

Baylor University has a 2 to 4 year standard MSW program that consists of 60 credit hours and a 1 to 2 year advanced standing program that consists of 32 credit hours. Students will pursue an MSW with a concentration in children & family clinical practice, community practice, or physical & mental health clinical practice, and can add an MSW certificate in trauma, gerontology, church social work, or global mission leadership. Baylor University also offers dual degrees in divinity, business administration, and theological studies.

Our Lady of the Lake University

Students can pursue a Master of Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake University through the Foundation program (57 credit hours) or the Advanced Standing program (30 credit hours). The MSW curriculum has a concentration of Services to Hispanic Children & Families and can be completed via online or on-site courses at two OLLU campuses.

Stephen F Austin State University

Stephen F Austin State University has an advanced generalist MSW program that emphasizes social justice in rural and diverse populations through curriculum and practice components. Students are required to complete 64 credit hours but may have some courses waived with the completion of a Bachelor of Social Work.

Tarleton State University

The MSW program at Tarleton State University consists of 32 or 64 credit hours, depending on undergraduate degree, and can be completed through three different campuses. Students become prepared for a variety of careers including family counselor, child welfare case working, and substance abuse counselor, in addition to choosing one of two MSW concentrations.

Texas A & M University - Commerce

Texas A & M University - Commerce has an MSW Foundations program (48 credit hours) and an MSW Advanced Generalist Practice program (36 credit hours). Students may take courses in mental health clinical practice, practice with families, social justice, and social work administration.

Texas A & M University - Kingsville

Students can earn a Master of Social Work in as little as one or two years at Texas A & M University - Kingsville. The program consists of 30 credit hours (advanced standing) or 60 credit hours, has a clinical/activist social work concentration, and prepares students to sit for Texas master's level social work licensing exam.

Texas Christian University

Texas Christian University's Master of Social Work program consists of a year of foundation courses (30 hours, may be waived for BSW students) and a year of advanced studies (30 credit hours). Students will complete internships along with coursework, and may also pursue a certificate in Women and Gender Studies (2-year students only) or a dual degree in divinity.

Texas State University

Texas State University has a program for non-BSW holders (62 credit hours) and a program for those who have a BSW (36 credit hours); both programs are available online and on campus. The programs emphasize practice and administrative social work services to diverse populations through an advanced practice leadership concentration.

Texas Women's University with University of North Texas

Texas Women's University and University of North Texas launch joint MSW programs in 2020, enabling students to take advantage of faculty, resources, and community at both schools. Students with a BSW may qualify for the advanced standing program and finish in one year (30 credit hours) and students without a BSW can earn their degree through the generalist program in as little as two years (60 credit hours).

Admittance Requirements for Social Work Master's Degree Programs in Texas

Master's degree programs in social work require students to have earned at least a bachelor's degree. Students who have a Bachelor of Social Work can enroll in MSW advanced standing tracks and programs, although some schools may require the BSW not be more than five years old. Schools may require students to have a qualifying GPA on their undergraduate coursework, such as a 3.0. Other requirements may include a statement of purpose, interview, a qualifying GRE score, and the completion of the IELTS or TOEFL test for international students.

Master's degrees in social work can be earned in one year by students who have a social work bachelor's degree, or two years for students who have a degree in another field. A number of schools in Texas offer foundation/standard and advanced programs, some of which allow students to choose a concentration area within their program.
