Job Description

Spanish teachers are responsible for introducing students to not only the Spanish language, but the culture that comes with the spoken word. You'll instruct students about Spanish history, traditions, and how the world has been shaped through the influence of the language. Your lesson plans will include in-class exercises to expose students to pronunciation and grammar. You will give tests that may include direct translations and vocabulary choices. You'll create homework assignments to help students reinforce their use of a foreign language.

Education and Training Requirements

To teach Spanish in Louisiana, you'll need to focus on both education and the Spanish language as a major. You can find this with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish while choosing the Spanish Education track. You'll get to learn about the linguistics and culture of the Spanish language while also preparing yourself for a career in middle or secondary education. As a future educator, you'll also experience a student teaching session with the supervision of a mentor. Some of the topics you might cover while majoring in Spanish include school foreign language methods, technology in education, and inclusive education.

Exam Requirements

All educators in Louisiana must take the Core Academic Skills for Educators exams in reading, writing, and mathematics. For these basic skills exams, you can choose to take them during separate appointments, or go through all of them in one longer session.

Spanish teachers will need to take two additional exams specific to the language to get certified. The World Languages Pedagogy exam and the Spanish: World Language exam are required for Spanish teachers, regardless of grade level. The Spanish: World Language exam contains a variety of question formats, including listening, writing, and speaking sections. The other exams are made up of multiple choice and short answer sections.

Certification Requirements

After you complete your bachelor's degree and pass all of the necessary Praxis exams, you will earn your certification to teach Spanish in Louisiana. After five years, you'll need to request a renewal through the school district employing you. As long as you have been consistently teaching for the five-year period, your certificate will be renewed for an additional three years. If you have taken time off for a whole academic semester or a consecutive period of 90 days, your certificate will lapse. If this is the case, you need to earn six credits in continuing education. You can do this at any accredited college or university in or around Louisiana.
