Professional Eligibility Certificate

This certificate is issued to someone who meets all requirements for standard certification but is not currently employed in a Maryland public school. It is valid for five years. In order to renew this certificate, an educator must complete six semester hours of accepted credit. Accepted credit is defined as credit that is earned from an accredited university or approved Continuing Professional Development within the five years in which the certificate was held. Candidates must also complete required reading if they are certified in specific teaching areas such as early childhood education and special education. For example, a teacher certified in early childhood education would need to complete 12 semester hours of reading coursework that includes topics such as acquisition of skills, methods of teaching reading, assessment in reading, and materials for reading instruction.

Standard Professional I Certificate

This certificate is issued to someone who satisfies all the requirements for a standard certificate and is currently employed by a Maryland public school. It is valid for five years. This certificate can only be renewed once, as holders of this certificate are meant to upgrade to a Standard Professional Standard II Certificate. In order to renew this certificate, the educator must complete six semester hours of accepted credit.

Advanced Professional Certificate

This certificate is issued to someone who has completed the required number of semester hours, has had at least three years of satisfactory school experience and has earned a master's degree or satisfied a set number of professional education course credits. It is valid for five years. In order to renew this certificate, the educator must still be employed in a Maryland public school and must have had at least three years of satisfactory teaching experience in the five years in which the certificate was held. The educator must also complete six semester hours of accepted credit and present a professional development plan to the school superintendent.

Conditional Teacher Certificate

This certificate is issued to someone who is employed by a Maryland public school but does not satisfy all the requirements needed to obtain a standard certificate. It is valid for two years and can only be renewed once, as the aim is for the educator to undertake standard certification. In order to renew this certificate, the candidate must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of coursework geared towards professional certification. The candidate must also take and pass a Praxis basic skills assessment, which includes assessments based on reading, writing, and math.

General Application Process

If the candidate is employed in a Maryland public school, the renewal application will be processed by their employer. If the candidate is not currently employed by a Maryland public school, they will need to submit the application and required documents themselves. In both cases, candidates must submit a cover letter with their name, mailing address, last four digits of their social security number, date of birth and a personal email address. Candidates must also submit proof of their accomplished semester hours, exam results or Continuing Professional Development credits that they have earned prior to the renewal request. Official transcripts must be presented in unopened envelopes or they will not be accepted. Payment should not be sent with the application, as the interested candidate will be informed by a representative from the Certification Branch of the Maryland State Department of Education when payment should be made. At that time, payment may be made via money order, certified check, cashier's check, or through an online portal.
