If you work in architectural technologies, you likely work in architectural drafting and design. Careers in architectural technologies require proficiency in science, math and art, and also require good interpersonal skills. Professionals in the field, known as architectural technicians or drafters, assist architects and construction workers by drawing details of buildings and structures using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software. As a drafter, you may also estimate costs of construction projects.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for architectural and civil drafters was expected to increase by only one percent during the 2012-2022 decade, which could actually produce little or no change in the number of available positions. Opportunities should be best for those with extensive experience with CADD software and other computer technology. The BLS also reported that the average salary for architectural and civil drafters was $50,550 in May 2012.
Many colleges offer certificate or associate's degree programs in architectural technologies designed to prepare you for entry-level positions with architectural firms or construction companies. In an architectural technology program, you learn the principles and practices of architectural drafting and design. You take courses in construction estimating, project management, construction materials, technical writing and architectural history. You can earn a certificate or associate's degree from a technical institute or community college.
Bachelor's degrees in architectural technologies are also available. At this level, you may receive more in-depth instruction in construction management and architectural design concepts. You may also take courses in environmental systems, urban and regional planning, project management and building information modeling.
