The field of general mathematical stats, or statistics, involves the collection and interpretation of numerical information according to math-based theories and principles. The data is generally taken from experiments, including surveys and polls. Since statistics are used in many fields, you might choose to work in a variety of industries, such as sports, business statistics, demographics, biostatistics and economics.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that around 25% of all statisticians worked in local, state or federal government in 2012; statisticians were also commonly employed by the finance, education, and healthcare industries (www.bls.gov). Employment for those who work in statistics is expected to grow 27% from 2012-2022, which is better than average when compared with all occupations. The BLS also reported that statisticians earned median pay of $75,560 in May 2012.
How Can I Work in General Mathematical Statistics?
Earning a Bachelor of Science in Statistics or a bachelor's degree in math with a concentration in statistics can qualify you for entry-level positions related to statistical research and applications. Usually, according to the BLS, a master's degree in statistics or a similar degree in math provides better preparation and, therefore, better job opportunities in both the public and private sectors. If you're interested in working in academia, a doctorate in statistics is the minimum requirement to become a researcher or faculty member. Courses in statistics degree programs include applied statistics, calculus, probability and numerical analysis.
