Career Overview

Chiropractor assistants work under the supervision of licensed chiropractors, and help out with a variety of day-to-day tasks. As a chiropractic assistant, your responsibilities might include taking patient histories, performing x-rays and processing clinical lab work. You may also inform patients and their families about procedures, position individuals prior to tests or treatments and instruct patients on home therapy techniques. Additionally, you could be responsible for scheduling appointments, answering phones, updating patient charts and handling billing.

Employment and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of medical assistants in general is expected to increase by 29% across the country, or much faster than average, between 2012 and 2022. As of May 2013, the median annual salary for a medical assistant was $29,610, as reported by the BLS (www.bls.gov).

How Can I Become a Chiropractic Assistant?

Educational Options

Many community colleges, vocational schools and other career education centers provide specialized degree programs in chiropractic or medical assisting. In general, aspiring professionals receive training in administrative and chiropractic procedures; instruction in radiology technologies and practices may also be provided. Administrative coursework may include topics in business law, bookkeeping, computer technology and insurance procedures.

Although each program is different, students also take courses in anatomy, clinical science, emergency procedures and medical coding and terminology. Lab procedures, nutrition, health regulations and diseases might also be covered. Programs typically culminate in an Associate of Science degree; certificate programs that can be completed in just a few months may also be available.
