Respiratory Therapy Professions

Respiratory therapists, also known as respiratory therapy technicians, evaluate, monitor and treat patients with breathing disorders and cardiopulmonary ailments. These diseases include asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, pneumonia, AIDS complications and others. Respiratory therapists assist and work with physicians to diagnose and treat patients. In the United States, respiratory therapists must be licensed in order to practice. An associate's degree is required, although professionals holding a bachelor's or master's degree may be desirable for increased salary and career opportunities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, respiratory therapists and technicians can expect to earn between $30,000 and $40,000 a year.
