Degree Options for Histotechnologists

The preferred degree program for aspiring histotechnologists is an Associate of Applied Science degree in Histotechnology. In this program, students will learn how to section frozen specimens and prepare slides that can be used by oncologists, pathologists, surgeons and other doctors to diagnose disease. Students can expect to study microbiology, mathematics, human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, technical writing and other broad health care topics. Additionally, they will receive hands on training in the methods, techniques and tools used by professional histotechnologists. Often they will be able to intern with a local hospital or clinic in order to learn from an experienced professional, as well as how to work with pathologists and other health care professionals. The demand for skilled histotechs, as they are known, is vastly outpacing the supply and graduates should expect to have excellent job prospects, with many earning salaries of over $40,000 after a few years of experience.
