Work in all aspects of fire safety administration is typically very hands-on. On an average day, a fire safety administrator may oversee a team of firefighters, paramedics or safety officers, often working under dangerous conditions. Fire safety administrators teach their teams how make split-second decisions when responding to emergency situations. They also ensure that proper procedures are followed when dealing with safety issues, such as hazardous materials, fires and combustion incidents. Other responsibilities of a fire safety administrator may include conducting fire safety education in the community, performing inspections at different facilities and investigating the causes of fires.

Employment Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs for firefighter and prevention worker supervisors, as well as fire investigators, should increase by six percent from 2012-2022 (www.bls.gov). Firefighting jobs should increase by seven percent during that same time. Over the 2012-2022 decade employment for these positions is projected to see slower than average growth, and job seekers should expect keen competition. The BLS also stated that in May 2012, the median salary for the supervisors was $68,210. Fire investigators' median earnings were $53,990 annually, and firefighters took home $45,250 in median wages that year.

How Can I Become a Fire Safety Administrator?

Training and Education

If you're interested in a career in fire safety, a high school diploma can be sufficient for entry-level jobs in most fire organizations, but on-the-job and formal training programs are necessary for supervisor or inspector roles. You can find 2-year associate's degree programs and 4-year bachelor's degree programs in fields like fire science, fire technology or fire safety administration. Completing these programs may give you an advantage over the competition. A degree program in fire safety administration focuses on the skills needed to be a firefighter, and teach you about administrative duties.

As a fire safety administration student, you may take courses in building construction, fire prevention and inspection, codes and standards, water supply and extinguisher systems. You can also learn about municipal fire administration, fire and safety laws, paperwork protocol and budgeting. These education programs may also include instruction on a range of science topics, including physics and chemistry.
